To be losing my temper at not being able to get a roofer?

Our roof sprung a leak 4 weeks ago. I contacted 5 roofers!
No1 didn’t reply
No2 recommended by our plumber came to look but said he needed to get up there to look on a dry day and would come back in 2 days.. nothing won’t answer phone.
No3 offered to do us a quote and never got back to us
No4 straight out said he didn’t do leaks only new builds
No5 took a week to come and look and turned up out of the blue. Gave us a price on a patch up and last Thursday said he would be round at the weekend to sort it. Nothing. No reply.

I know a small repair isn’t a big job but our roof is on its last legs and we’re asking for a repair now.. and quotes for a full reroof in spring.

how the hell do I get that done when I can’t get anyone to even look and reply??!!

My plumbers gave me a contact for when they need roof flues put in. He never came back. My plumber made a suggestion as to what could be done which was the same as several roofers.

The slates are 1980s man made and may or may not contain asbestos so there’s no way me or hubby can “scrape out the crap and fill it with mastic” exact quote from no5 who didn’t show this weekend.

Sorry I've been a main contractor on a self build and if I got nowhere that was my next tactic.

Then Nextdoor app, then check-a-trade and finally find out which pub your local trades drink at and ask, ask the plumbers, Brickie's anyone in the trades they will always know a roofer.

Failing that go further afield as some will travel for jobs if they aren't so busy.

It's so difficult these days getting hold of reliable trades. We're so lucky to have a plumber and joiner in the family, my friends DH fits doors and windows. We know a good electrician and plasterer. Our roofer is semi retired and great for small repairs, we had a leak near our chimney, he went up the ladder, fixed the flashing and done in 30 mins for £40. He also took down an old satellite dish whilst he was there. I hope you manage to find a roofer 🤞

Can you contact an actual builder/contractor instead? They will take the job on and arrange a roofer for you.

Is there a neighbourhood Facebook group where you live? Or a local forum? That's how I nabbed an electrician and a plumber.

Be careful we got absolutely scammed by a pair of dodgy roofers and lost a lot of money. We also have no clue what they actually did to our roof as we are waiting on a surveyor. Trading standards recommend using Which trader for making sure they are recommended. Do not use Bark as they make it appear like they are recommending traders but run for the hills if there is a complaint.

I feel you OP - so many contractors say they'll come out and never turn up, no explanation - so last week I went with the first roofer who turned up promptly, gave us a quote, and was willing to start work the next day 🤦‍♀️ It's now clear that he's scammed us out of £2300...so please don't let your frustrations override your instincts and due diligence, like I did!

Yep tried that. The two most recommended ones one came looked and never quoted. The other ignored all contact.
