Does the film The Snowman make your pre-school child cry?

I always remember it being really sad when he melted.
My DC has kindly been invited to watch it in the cinema on his 4th birthday with his childminder and the rest of the kids.

Im suddenly having visions of him crying because the snowman has melted.

Was it that traumatic or is it just my brain that has made it into something bigger over the years?
(I haven't watched it in over 30 years, so bear with me on this one, my memory isn't what it is).
Ive no doubt he will have an awesome time, aside from that bit?!

It makes my 33 year old DH cry, not going to attempt it with my kids for a while!

Mrsphilmiller · 27/11/2022 16:56

you haven’t watched the snowman in over 30 years?!?! 😮😮

TellMeWhere · 27/11/2022 16:57

I don't think it made me cry until I was an adult Grin
I dread watching it every year, but it's tradition.

Pinniepotter · 27/11/2022 16:57

I find it quite emotional but my 4yo was completely unfazed. If she ever was saddened by a story I'd just comfort her though, nothing wrong with crying is there. I wouldn't worry OP.

Pinniepotter · 27/11/2022 16:57

That said I wouldn't show her Bambi.

Oysterbabe · 27/11/2022 16:58

My son watched it at 3 and was fine with it. Snowmen melt 💁

No because I remember being painfully gutted when the snowman melted!

Non of my 3 GD have cried watching it last week at 3 4 and 6 years....they were all very matter of fact that he melted.

I've never watched Bambi! I heard it was pure trauma

fuck that! 😭😭

That was the hidden message behind it though. It was about the inevitability that nothing is forever.

1234IDeclareAPeanutWar · 27/11/2022 17:00

Excellent, you have all sorted my ridiculous notion of him crying in the cinema out then.

My rational brain was attempting to tell me this but I needed to hear it.

I also haven't watched it in over 30 years because it was too traumatic as a child!

TellMeWhere · 27/11/2022 17:02

It's sad but it's not traumatic (until you're grown). It was never actually meant to be a Christmas thing - it's about death.

PeachCottonTree · 27/11/2022 17:03

I remember finding it sad but don’t remember crying when I was little. The cartoon Granpa however had me sobbing every time when the little girl finds the empty armchair and goes looking for him 😭

Greenginghamdress · 27/11/2022 17:04

Watch it last year. It made me cry 🥲
DD wasn't bothered at all in fact not really interested 🙈

Beach11 · 27/11/2022 17:06

Makes me cry every time 😭

Exactly.
On his fourth birthday. 😭

This is why they invented The travesty Snowman and Snow Dog, which not only has a happy ending but also "A dog is for Christmas" as message.

OodieBoogie · 27/11/2022 17:34

For me, as an adult, The snowman, an "aww, he melted "moment

The snowman and the snow dog however ... Bawled. My. Bollocks. Off.

DS very matter of fact about both.

The snow dog makes you cry too?! I've never seen it! 😭😭

I'm glad your DS was hardcore ok!

Me and DH watch it every year on Christmas Day (and I always cry!)

When DS was 3 we showed it to him on Christmas morning - he sat for a minute then burst into tears. And then sobbed all the way through opening his stocking gifts😬haven't attempted it since!!

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 27/11/2022 18:25

I didn’t start crying at the end of The Snowman until I hit perimenopause. Now, it’s bucketfuls.

Peripeteia · 27/11/2022 18:30

I cry as soon as I hear the music. Loved it as a child though.

CryCeratops · 27/11/2022 18:33

It’s never bothered my DC.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/11/2022 18:35

Not The Snowman, but the sequel, The Snow Dog, makes me cry.
