So, my kitchen is atrocious, it has that horrible bubbly wall paper and we can’t afford to get a complete new one. I have started stripping the paper and now doubting my decision. I just wanted to make it look a bit less dated for Christmas.

Have you got a steam cleaner? I used the window cleaning attachment on mine to strip wallpaper

Ihateplaydoh2 · 27/11/2022 14:00

I’ll post a pic I really need some ideas. No I don’t have a steam cleaner.

If you can get a steamer, do it. It will make the job much easier. Keep going!

Ihateplaydoh2 · 27/11/2022 14:05

I can’t afford new appliances etc and the cupboards are an awful colour 😩

InDubiousBattle · 27/11/2022 14:08

Did you put the wallpaper up? My main worry would be what the wall under it's like!

infohere · 27/11/2022 14:09

Look up "removing anaglypta wallpaper"

InDubiousBattle · 27/11/2022 14:09

What colour are your units?

Ihateplaydoh2 · 27/11/2022 14:11

No I didn’t put it up, it was like this when we moved but I cannot look at it any longer, yea what if I open a can of worms 😩

OP posts:
Testina · 27/11/2022 14:12

I’m afraid I’m with @InDubiousBattle - very often textured wallpaper hides that the wall underneath isn’t very smooth! But never mind, a bit of elbow grease and filler and you can sort that cheaply. But… be aware this is a potentially a bigger project than you planned!

If you want it to be nice for Xmas, forget about “old fashioned” and stick a tree in that corner!

Same here. I tried to do it up as much as I could myself. It's not perfect and I have a few bits to tile yet (bought the gear and going to have a go, you tube tutee).

I bought new doors (saved up). It makes a big difference. A bit of work to do making sure hinge holes correct distance and measurements correct for doors. New knobs too. Did plinths to match. Also got stuck into doing flooring too. Again you tube videos.

Steam will definitely help. What's your plans for your kitchen space @Ihateplaydoh2 ?

InDubiousBattle · 27/11/2022 14:15

My friend has just done a room with very similar wall paper and she did a tongue and groove panelling on the bottom half of the wall and left wall paper on the top half then painted the whole lot dark blue and it looks nice.

@InDubiousBattle yes I agree with you. Some of my kitchen is this as well got it from wickes reasonably priced.
Just glued it on (not meant to be done that way I but I thought what the hell why not). I printed and glossed it so I can wipe it. Dado rail ontop of panel. Thought I'd add this in as sometimes knowing other people do this themselves helps. I couldn't go around sockets though I wouldn't know what to do.

ScornedChicken · 27/11/2022 14:20

*primed not printed 🙈

girlmom21 · 27/11/2022 14:26

Get one of these then soak the paper with hot soapy water www.screwfix.com/p/zinsser-paper-tiger-scoring-tool-3mm/3469h

girlmom21 · 27/11/2022 14:27

With the units get some sticky back vinyl from
B&Q

InDubiousBattle · 27/11/2022 14:45

Do you have any tiles/splashback? I think dark navy or a dark moss green on the walls could look nice. What's your budget? New handles for the cupboards and some nice plants, glass jars etc would really help.

LadyBiker · 27/11/2022 15:52

Soak paper off, fill in holes then sand, maybe hang lining paper before painting if walls need evening out? New handles (or paint them with metal paint?), paint cabinets, put out a few plants, perhaps pick up a few bits from Primark - I recently bought some lovely fake plants in clear glass jars from there and they only cost a couple of pounds each. If you have the time and some cash you can do it before Christmas. If all else fails and you can't do it in time, light the room with tealights - candles make everything look better!
Good luck, OP, wish you a great Christmas!

Ihateplaydoh2 · 27/11/2022 18:13

Thanks ladies! In answer to your question about tiles yes there are a few going round one side of the kitchen with a black thin stripe at the top, who buys a house with a terrible kitchen! Ha xx

Do you know anyone with a steamer you could borrow.

As for cabinets, I painted ours. Looks lovely.
