Why is absolutely everyone I know having baby boys!

Needsomeadvice33 · 26/11/2022 21:51

I'm at that age where absolutely everyone I know is having kids. A large number are now on their 2nd kid. So me and my husband have no kids (happily childfree have 4 nephews no nieces) but we are so fascinated by the fact that absolutely nobody we know is having girls.
Literally in the last few years we are talking at least 30 boys and only 2 girls (one of which my friend told me she gender swayed for a girl and it took her like 10 months to get pregnant as she was actively avoiding ovulation).
It's became a joke that me and my husband say to eachother as soon as we hear of another pregnancy announcement "another boy then 😂".
Anyway I've been reading about the returning soldier effect where after World wars there's always far more boys born. There's a recent study regarding this.
Wonder if the pandemic has made men produce more y sperm 🤣.
Or is it perhaps because I'm at an age where women are actively tracking ovulation and with the popularity of ovulation sticks they are all having sex right at ovulation so more likely to produce boys. 🤔
Wonder what others make of this and are you all seeing the same.
Also seen there's a US nurse talking about it on tiktok.

I think they should do a study to see if men produce more y sperm after having covid.

Of the dozen or so women who were pregnant at the same time I was pregnant with DS2, I was the only one to have a boy. (Was kind of gutting at the time as I’d really been hoping for a daughter.)

rickandmorts · 27/11/2022 00:57

Anecdotally I know of a lot more people having boys than girls at the minute! I'm due next week with a surprise but I'm 99.9% sure it's a boy 😁

Cakewineorgin · 27/11/2022 01:29

I think it is luck of the draw, but that being said I moved house to try to get a DS after having my DD. I noticed that there were only girls being born on our street and after talking to our neighbours, no boys had been born there during the 20 years they had lived there. We moved and I later had DS.

We bumped into our old neighbours 14 years later and this came up in conversation. There still had been no boy babies born since we moved. I know this is really just down to coincidence, but it certainly made me wonder. 🤷‍♀️

DuchessDandelion · 27/11/2022 01:54

Something in the water, op.

Squirrelsnut · 27/11/2022 01:58

Around the time I had DS, my brother and two close friends had two girls each, ie 6 girls.

wombat1a · 27/11/2022 00:14

That makes no sense whatsoever to me. If you wait a few days after then there will be only X present??? Wouldn't it make more sense to do it a few days before hand so there would only be X present later on?

@wombat1a yes you are correct. If you have sex at ovulation generally the y sperm will win.

but If you have sex a few days before ovulation, then the y sperm have died off and only x sperm are left by the time ovulation happens.

Likeahamster · 27/11/2022 06:38

I was talking to my husband last night about this. His sister is pregnant and just found out it’s a boy. In our combined families/friends/colleagues there have been 17 babies born this year, all boys and his sister is one of 5 pregnant women we know and all are having boys.

It's probably just where you are from and coincidence. I mean slightly more boys are born than girls naturally. Personally I know lots of people having girls and a fair amount of boys. My son is in a class with 15 girls and 6 boys my other son slightly more girls than boys. The school overall has more girls than boys. Just 20 minutes away in the car my friend has a girl and is totally out numbered by boy and there are more boys than girls in that primary school.

I always thought there were generally slightly more girls born than boys! I assumed it was to account for how dangerous childbirth was/is. Lots of men having multiple wives as they had lost the previous one giving birth.

I think your point about lots of women having sex at the point of ovulation is an interesting one, OP. But by the sounds of it this is just a local phenomenon!

TarquinOliverNimrod · 27/11/2022 06:46

Nope loads of my friends are currently pregnant, all girls. I’m the only one to have a boy and should add I’m thrilled about it.

And to the pp who said it’s a ‘bad omen’ 🙄 MN is so man hating

Mindystryder · 27/11/2022 06:47

The timing of the sex thing is shettles theory - it has been debunked and is not true but for some reason people seem to think it's fact.
Also, anecdotally, I had my first going on 6 years ago and he was a boy plus all my friends who were pregnant had boys. Then everyone started having their second babies and all girls....except mine! So out of pretty much everyone I know, I'm the only one to have same sex DC (and the ones who do now have two of the same went on to have a third to make that happen)! Really interesting.

salemsongbird · 27/11/2022 06:51

Another thing I've read a study supporting is the effect of maternal condition on sex of baby - this particular study showed that women who ate breakfast were more likely to have boys! I've noticed that second babies are often boys anecdotally in my wider circle, and have wondered if this is more common because women are generally at a higher body weight/eating more than when they conceived their first born. Probably just coincidence but I have wondered this for a while!

CatSeany · 27/11/2022 07:16

Coincidence probably, but I guess there could be something in it. Everyone in our friendship group has had a boy as their first child too! We had a girl as our second though.

ParentsTrapped · 27/11/2022 07:18

My local (massive London) hospital posts a monthly update on birth stats in their maternity unit on insta and it’s always around 50:50 male:female, with a range maybe to 55:45 each way. Just coincidence that you’re seeing more boys - on population level it evens out.

NoraBarlow111 · 27/11/2022 07:25

If you look at population pyramid you will see that for the last 30 years boys outnumber girls by 1% in most countries.

Spiderboy · 27/11/2022 07:27

Tracking ovulation doesn’t impact what sex your baby is 🤦🏼‍♀️

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/11/2022 07:35

It's all girls around here, to the point that I had started to wonder what's going on. Good to hear it's being balanced out elsewhere!

PleaseBeHonest · 27/11/2022 07:50

This fascinates me. I lived in a country where it was common for White European men to marry Asian (Far Eastern) women. Absolutely every couple we knew in this situation with DC had exclusively daughters. One evening DH and I went through all the mixed couples we knew where the DH was white and the DW Asian and EVERY SINGLE ONE had DDs. Not one DS. This was out of 60+ DC. How is that possible? We wondered if it was because the men tended to be older. But really we had no clue. It was just so strange.

sorrynotathome · 27/11/2022 07:54

In my family and friend circle it’s almost all girls. Nothing strange, weird, spooky, conspiracy, new, amazing, secret etc etc etc. If you ask experienced teachers they’ll tell you about classes or year groups heavily weighted one way or the other. Totally normal.

TeslaCoat · 27/11/2022 07:56

My dc are in 1/3 2/3 boy heavy classes (year 6 and year 9). It's annoying.

Both naice leafy schools. The boys in year 6 are all from stable interested and loving families and are so immature and silly, I think this is due to lockdown at a crucial age and way too many hours spent gaming.

Male sperm are stronger so if there are X and Y sperm present the Y will be successful. Female sperm live longer so if you wait until a few days after ovulation, there are likely to only be X sperms present.

Neurodivergent women tend to have more boys. I don’t think that’s scientifically proven - just an observation.

This is completely untrue - this has been studied amd debunked multiple times.

Here is an example:

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1440662/

Oysterbabe · 27/11/2022 08:01

I think it's coincidence.
DS has just started reception and across the 2 classes there are 40 boys and 20 girls. DD is in year 2 and there are more girls than boys in her class.

TinySaltLick · 27/11/2022 08:02

XjustagirlX · 27/11/2022 06:32

As above - no it isn't correct. You shouldn't spread this misinformation it isn't helpful for people ttc
