To have not helped this man ?

In Morrison’s this evening, and i’m paying for shopping at one of those self-checkout tills - the long version for trolleys (only because no actual tills were open Hmm) The man at the one next to me comes over and says that his card has been declined and could I pay for his roughly £20 worth of shopping. He said he would bank transfer me. After thinking about it momentarily, I politely told him no, as i wasn’t keen on giving out my bank details to strangers. Plus, I didn’t understand how if his card had been rejected it would allow him to transfer me the money there and then anyway. Confused Thinking about it , if it had been someone elderly , or another woman i probably would have helped out, but he was a young dodgy-looking guy and i couldn’t help thinking the way he asked me sounded a bit strange.

You were absolutely right to go with your gut feeling.

Irridescantshimmmer · 26/11/2022 21:23

It seems dodgy to me, I am certain you have done the right thing OP.

No one in their right mind should give any bank details out to a stranger, there is no guarantee you'd get the money back.

XenoBitch · 26/11/2022 21:24

YANBU
I would have done the same. Always follow your gut.

KangarooKenny · 26/11/2022 21:24

I wouldn’t have either. Cheek of it !

cookiesbeforepookies · 26/11/2022 21:26

YANBU, if he’s savvy enough to transfer you the cash there and then then he’s savvy enough to get Apple Pay or Google Pay or put his debit card on his phone.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/11/2022 21:27

It’s a big ask of a stranger. Yanbu to say no.

merryhouse · 26/11/2022 21:50

I'm a big sucker, but finally at the age of 53 I would say - "no, not convinced"

If the supermarket and the ATMs aren't working, why would the bank transfer?

PurpleButterflyWings · 26/11/2022 21:52

LOL as if! Not a chance would I do this. £20 is a lot of money! A quid maybe... but £20 - no chance! Also, why the F would you give him your bank details?!

All the LOLz Grin

BeautifulDragon · 26/11/2022 22:11

No way!

The only way I would do something like that would be of my own accord, not by being harassed by some bloke at the tills.

chikp · 26/11/2022 22:13

No well dodgy

justcallmebozo · 26/11/2022 22:19

No way, and i think i would probably have told a staff member, in case someone else got conned.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 26/11/2022 22:25

Things that absolutely definitely happened part 314…

Georgeskitchen · 26/11/2022 22:27

No way CF alert

Pixiedust1234 · 26/11/2022 22:37

Its one thing for you to notice they were having problems with their card and you offering to pay but quite another for them to approach you and ask. Normal people tend to flag an assistant to ask for help in case the machine is faulty. Besides you could have been paying for a bottle of whiskey, not food.

Pegasushaswings · 26/11/2022 22:38

It’s a scam, he probably asks everyone as the self service tills are easy pickings.

notnowB · 26/11/2022 22:41

Crikey, I'd help anyone normally, but that would've been a hard no!

TerrysNeapolitan · 26/11/2022 22:49

It would be F off from me. That is a scam.

KaleToChristmas · 26/11/2022 22:50

no way

SkinnyFatte · 26/11/2022 22:58

Scam.

Tangelablue · 26/11/2022 23:04

If contactless declines then you just have to put your pin in, like the old days. It sounds as though he didn't know the pin. £20 is to much to hand out for most people these days so you were definitely not unreasonable.

JustAnotherManicMomday · 26/11/2022 23:05

Classic con. You pay for his shopping, he reports the transfer to the bank to stop them paying you. Your left £20 out of pocket.

SpinningFloppa · 26/11/2022 23:07

No but then I wouldn’t have done it for anyone including a woman or elderly person

TitsInAbsentia · 26/11/2022 23:30

It's a no from me. If he was asking for me to buy him a pint of milk and a loaf of bread then maybe but £20 worth? Nope.

Summerfun54321 · 26/11/2022 23:55

Nope. It’s one thing offering to pay, but someone asking you is very rude.

ALongHardWinter · 31/03/2023 18:09

You were absolutely right not to do this. No way would I give my bank details out to a total stranger.
