"Mum charged £47 for two bags of pick and mix from Cardiff Winter Wonderland"

When I saw the headline I was shocked someone would pay that much for a couple of bags of sweets even at a place like winter wonderland, which like tourist traps and a lot of attractions are going to be very expensive.

However on reading the story the company isn't wrong in saying that the price per 100g was displayed, as well as a weighing scale being available, plus the mum let her child start eating the sweets before they had fully paid so couldn't put them back?

I don't think the stall has really done anything wrong? Apart from it being very expensive, but then that's why I don't buy stuff from these sorts of places.

@grubbyduck I googled the fudge company that makes the Event fudge - It’s lovely ( In my opinion) They do mail order by the sounds of it.

What's the price per 100g and what does 100g look like?

Roundandnour · 26/11/2022 23:46

Wasn’t the cost of pick and mix at Woolworths one of the reasons why people used to walk round the store eating it? 😂

pick and mix has always been expensive. Bags provided massive to attract the dopey fuckers into thinking they need to fill the bag.

The parents are idiots. A kilo isn’t exactly light and you know that the weight of a regular size bag or sweets would be a lot bloody lighter.

sunnydaytoday0 · 26/11/2022 23:47

I wonder which is the better value, supermarkets that sell that sell pick n mix per weight, or those that sell it per volume (i.e. fill a cup for a set cost).

I'm guessing with the latter you can at least compress the more flexible sweets by squashing it down with your fist, then pour very small sweets on top and shake it down to fill the air gaps.

Ok maybe I've thought about it too much 😂

At the M&M store they have example bags on display showing prices for them, it is surprising how expensive it is. That said 1.6 kg is a lot and most people would have some reference, bag of sugar is a kilo, blink of butter is 250g etc. I find being generally pretty tight with kids is the best policy.

That's the 'salad' approach when you buy a volume of salad - and you fill your container as effectively as possible to get the most in

I have never thought about that before - that makes total sense.

How do we get more money? Just have bigger bags to encourage people to fill them up.

Haha!😂
👏
Put it this way- £3.50’s worth stumped even me- and I’m a gannet for their fudge.
I’m not sure- I said what I wanted to spend, and they sliced some off the “Loaf”

Definitely not self service for hygiene reasons .

When we were little and got pick and mix at the cinema we’d have to give the bag to my dad every few sweets to estimate-weigh with his hand. You learn quickly that it’s better to get loads of foam bananas or jazzies than even a single piece of fudge. I can’t picture being allowed to run amok to the tune of 1.6kg.

ScrollingLeaves · 26/11/2022 23:55

This is around £20 for the same amount of sweets. £47 is a rip off price.

Even £20 probably gives a large profit margin.

People out for a treat ought to check the price, of course, but it is natural to forget to do this at the end of a busy activity with children, and it is natural to be unprepared for this level of profit making.

It is good of the venue to plan on making some pre-bagged and priced sweets, and to explain the pricing more clearly in the future.

She should have negotiated for a volume discount.

FallingsHowIFeel · 26/11/2022 23:57

Oh come on. Those bags would have been quite heavy for some sweets. And then these idiots ran to the newspaper. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

Ahh remember penny sweets? I used to love picking out a 100 sweets for a pound and watching the cashier count them (and making you put some back if over !)

A pound on penny sweets?! That’s mental. It was 10p in my house.

1600 grams is a LOT of sweets though.

Even if it's fudge.

Tesco fudge is 49 p per 100g. A bag of that is 175 g.

She brought about 10 bags worth of fudge that you can get in a supermarket, but that costs 5 times more per bag.

SparklyMistleToes · 27/11/2022 00:02

Her fault for not watching her fucking kids being greedy little buggers.

I've witnessed something similar at a country fair where a mother wasn't paying attention to what her kid was doing. The guy working he the stall finally told the kid he'd chosen enough sweets and to wait for his mum. The bag ended up being over £17. Lucky for them the man allowed for some of it to go back. I'm not sure I'd be so generous lol. I'm sure they deal with that day in and day out. I'd get sick of it and want a few to learn their lesson

FallingsHowIFeel · 27/11/2022 00:15

I don’t think it was fudge they bought, it was typical pick n mix sweets. There’s a photo of sweets that says ‘image Rhiannon Brown’ which is the mother’s name so presumably a photo of some of what they actually bought. And it’s sweets not fudge. That would have been a lot of sweets. Idiots. 😂

latetothefisting · 27/11/2022 00:16

a whole tin of quality street is only 1kg, their bags must have been absolutely stuffed!
Plus, isn't letting your kids eat items that are costed by weight before they are weighted and paid for stealing? Why would you admit to:
a) allowing your kids to load up with enough sugar to put them into a diebetic coma
b) being so crap with weights and maths
c) theft
AND suffer the shame of a tabloid sadface
just to get a refund of your own choice.
The only thing the company did wrong was to refund her!

Mum charged £47 for two bags of pick and mix from Cardiff Winter Wonderland

I thought it was pick and mix from this. That’s why I showed the 1500 gram of pick and mix type sweets costing £18.99

cakeorwine · Yesterday 23:59

Tesco fudge is 49 p per 100g. A bag of that is 175 g.

If fudge is 49p per 100g at Tesco then 1600 grams would cost £7.84 so even more of a far cry from £47.

HerMajestysRoyalCoven · 27/11/2022 00:19

It’d be a bargain for the same amount of diamonds though. Which is why this sort of comparison is silly.

1600 grams of pick and mix has got to be a large volume.

It's a great maths lesson though.

HerMajestysRoyalCoven · 27/11/2022 00:22

@ScrollingLeaves I assume that unless the people running the stall were competing on the Apprentice, they weren’t selling tesco fudge, but homemade fudge. They may well be making a good profit but nobody is being forced to buy it!

Location, location, location.

But if it's pick and mix - well, a 100 g of Haribo sweers costs £1

ScrollingLeaves · 27/11/2022 00:27

If 100g of haribou costs £1
1600g of haribou would be £16

And at Winter Wonderland?

What are you saying here, cake?
