8 month old baby with 38.3 degrees temperature - should I panic?

We are on holiday in the Southern Hemisphere. My baby, 8 months old had a temperature earlier in the day of 37.7 degrees. I tried to give her Calpol but I think she spat most of it out (it was a battle to get it into her mouth with a syrange, she won’t take it with milk either as can taste it presumably, I can’t dilute it with more milk either as she will not finish the bottle).

Some 5 hours later after putting her to bed she felt really hot and measured at 38.6. I tried Calpol again, same story as above not sure how much actually went in, as well as cooling her down, only wearing a nappy and aircon on.

The temperature during the day is around 28 degrees and at night doesn’t go below around 22.

This is not a true AIBU question but posting here for traffic.

First question I have is can the high temperature be caused by overheating?

Second question, at what stage should I be getting more worried and start thinking about seeking medical attention.

Don’t worry.

up to 38 can be in the normal range. Mine ran “hot” so normal for them was 37.5-38 in the evening.

how are they in themselves? I don’t usually worry too much unless the temp is heading to 39+, or they have other concerning symptoms- dehydration, floppiness, pale extremities etc.

I'd try calpol again but wouldn't worry too much unless her temp goes above 39°

Both mine tend to run hot and 'normal' for them is about 38.

I would keep fluids up, calpol if need be and keep an eye

Hope she feels better soon

Everything else seems fine. No other visible symptoms and she is her usual self.Asleep now, I already woke her up once measuring her temperature and forcing Calpol down 🙁. She wasn’t unsettled herself.

I wouldnt panic yet.
Kids get fevers all the time. Even with high fever (under 41) I dont give mine medicine if they arent feeling horrible. I would give them something for a low fever if they feel terrible though. Our gp said with fever just keep an eye on the child and how they are. Most fevers they just sleep off in a couple days.

When you use the syringe make sure that you direct it to their cheek - that way they should swallow it.

Sarahcoggles · 26/11/2022 19:12

Give her nurofen. Way better for temperatures than calpol

My daughter got like this in the summer here (Scottish with Irish heritage so even mid -high 20s far too hot for us!) I’d keep an eye on her to make sure she’s not getting dehydrated but I don’t think there’s any need to panic, she’s probably just too hot! Try giving her a cool bath before bed.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 26/11/2022 19:37

A high temp is completely normal and shows her immune system is working well. Nothing to worry about usually

Thank you all for responses.

An update.

She woke up in the night, her usual waking when she has a bottle of milk (used to be breast but drying up). I gave her bottle, she didn’t drink much and after was unsettled so I walked around with her for a while. Then when I tried to put her to bed she vomited the milk.

I also measured her temperature again before she had her milk, 38.1.

It took her a while to settle again but is asleep now.
