To think we should probably buy our children less this Christmas if we care about their future?

What do you think? Where are you on the spectrum between an all out Christmas as usual with all the consumption of the earth's resources that involves and a Christmas that prioritises the planet we leave our children over a lot of things we could probably cheerfully do without?

YABU Christmas as usual in our house.

YANBU We have thought about it and reined things in a bit.

Ours get a good pile of stuff for Christmas, but it includes things that they need throughout the year. Sports equipment, clothes, new trainers etc.

I like them having plenty to open.

We have cut down a lot on adult gifts though, and don’t buy tat. I’d rather spend bit more than buy token gifts.

Mine are getting a second hand stick and a satsuma. Bread and jam for Xmas dinner and they will be grateful for that.

😂😂😂😂don’t forget the lump of coal.

As mu kids ge

FourTeaFallOut · 26/11/2022 20:14

🤣...I'll try again.

As my kids get older the present pile gets smaller and far more expensive. So yes, we are buying less stuff this year but I'm not winning any prizes for a concerted effort at saving the planet.

Fairislefandango · 26/11/2022 20:29

Perhaps I should have made the YABU/YANBU more contentious?

YABU The hardest, worst, most horrible climate apocalypse the sooner the better for my children please!

YANBU I do what I can to stave it off as long as possible and soften its effects because every little helps.

People have already given you plenty of reasons why YABU, and none of them were because we don't give a shit about climate change.

What is unreasonable is your blanket assumption about what most or all people already do. When people get a bee in their bonnet about one particular thing which we all should or shouldn't be doing in order to save the planet, they are rarely squeaky clean themselves, and the object of their ire is often more to do with their own prejudices (on the Christmas topic it's usually snobbery about tat and tackiness, dressed up as concern about over-consumption).

I don’t have kids and my Christmas has been pared back for years - don’t even do Xmas dinner. Do I win? 😳

How many beef burgers have you eaten in your lifetime? Do you knit your own pants out of lentils?

LittIe · 26/11/2022 20:56

Surely if you’ve had children, you can’t claim to give one single shit about protecting the world’s resources anyway?

The 8 billionth person was born last week.

Yes and UK population is 70 million. So nothing we do makes any difference. Simple math.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 26/11/2022 21:14

Christmas presents for adults -please don't buy 'gifts' . Buy something useful or nothing.
Which presents do you actually remember from the last 5 years?

Presents for children... while you are still able to buy their hearts desires and these are still memorable. Go ahead!

Mine had a lemon & potato one year in a huge box from Santa! Because that's what happens to children who don't believe anymore !
Definitely cheap and biodegradable! Win win all round.
