AIBU To ask for recs for a really good travel insurance policy...that covers ill close relatives

So, I've planned a holiday quite far into the future, paid for the flights etc...and I'd like to get a decent travel insurance.

I'd like to get one that gives good coverage - including, if poss, a close relative getting seriously ill as bereavement. My sister is recovering from cancer.

Any suggestions?

I've got my last few insurances through stay sure. My DD has LD's etc, she wouldn't cope with travelling home, or a stay in hospital by herself, so we had a group policy that covered us. That was some time ago so I'm not sure what they now offer, but they were the cheapest for the best cover for health issues.

Thank you - sorry, hope I was clear enough. Not travelling with sister - but just in case her condition worsens and we feel we can't go away

I would think that most general policies won't cover a situation where the increased risk is already known.

I think you would have to contact a specialist insurer like Stay Sure or All Clear. It could be quite expensive but they will probably consider the exact circumstances before they quote.

Yes, that's a good point. Thanks, though. Will try those sites

Firstly, sorry about your sister. Cancer sucks. It would probably make more sense to pay extra to make your flights and hotel stay fully refundable, but I'm guessing it's too late for that

I don't think insurance would cover unless the death was not due to preexisting conditions. You'd also need insurance that would cover that particular relationship and they might not.

I'd try an insurance broker in your circumstances.

You’ll find it almost impossible. In effect, you’re asking someone to insure you against an event that is likely to happen. At best it’ll be prohibitive in cost. I agree with a pp. make sure your flights and hotels are fully refundable within 24 hours of the departure.

This is from Comparethemarket.com
*When might a death in the family not be covered by insurance?

The cover provided for bereavement won’t pay out if your relative died from a condition (including a pre-existing medical condition) or circumstances that were known to you before you bought the policy or when you booked your trip, if that condition was likely to lead to you having to cut short or cancel your trip. This applies to those travelling with you, non-travelling family members or any family you were planning on staying with abroad.

The definition of what constitutes a ‘close’ relation differs among providers. Some policies will include cousins and brothers- or sisters-in-law, while others won’t. Some providers may specify that partners must have been living at the same address as you for a set period – for example, six months – to qualify*

Thanks all.

The flights aren't refundable, but that's ok. It's done and as much as I hope we don't have to lose money, the reason we would lose it would be much more horrific...if that makes sense...i
