Is this a silly gift for a new baby?

My lovely dog walker's first child is due next month, and I've bought a couple of little gifts for baby's arrival. The dogwalker and his wife are Polish; I've never met her though.
One of the gifts is an item of clothing, so that's fine. But the other is a lovely children's book that I've just found on special offer. But it's in English! His English is good and I assume it's the same for his wife, but I'm not sure. The book is 'Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes', so if memory serves me correctly, the theme is different children around the world.
I could be overthinking this, but would it have been more appropriate to buy a book in their own language?

I think you’re over thinking this. I think it’s a lovely gesture.

notnowB · 26/11/2022 08:01

I don't know why I thought it might cause offence Blush

No, I think it sounds like a lovely gift! You said his English is good so I'm sure they'll be happy to read in English to the baby. If his wife doesn't speak English then it can just be a book for him to read.

I imagine like most bilingual families that they'll speak Polish at home and will have some access to home language books from family ☺️

My toddler loves this book, and did before she had much language so I don’t think that’s an issue. I do think books for a newborn aren’t the best gift though. We got loads and it just meant we had to store them until baby was older and into it. We were in a tiny flat though so may no apply.

I think that’s a very thoughtful gift - nobody sensible could possibly be offended that a child’s book is written in the language of the country they live in.

Wibbly1008 · 26/11/2022 08:03

If they live in UK their child will grow up speaking English…

Auntiepaella · 26/11/2022 08:04

It’s a lovely idea and I’m sure it’ll be well received. I don’t think they’ll be offended by it at all 😊

Thanks all Smile

It's a lovely thought and a really good book!

Lovely gift! I buy this book for everyone we know that has a baby. I was bought it for my first baby and can still recite it from memory!

SmileyClare · 26/11/2022 08:06

It’s essentially a children’s picture book anyway, with very few words.

Its a really thoughtful gift, don’t worry ! I’m sure they’ll be touched by your gesture.

caringcarer · 26/11/2022 08:07

I am sure they will appreciate your very kind gift. I know several Polish people living in UK and all speak excellent English.

SnapCackleFlop · 26/11/2022 08:08

I think you sound really kind and they’ll be delighted! ☺️

Divebar2021 · 26/11/2022 08:11

its a kind thought to give any kind of gift. They could always read it to the baby in Polish if they preferred… the translation is probably not complicated. 😀

notnowB · 26/11/2022 08:11

Great! Good to know I haven't misjudged the situation.
It's on offer for £2.28 on Amazon Prime at the moment. I know we're all feeling the pinch so hopefully by sharing, someone else can enjoy this bargain too Smile
