To think that Youtube is on the verge of becoming another Teleshopping channel?

Don't get me wrong.

Some channels are great and informative. But geez, there are others that started out great some 4 or 5 years ago but are now full of interruptions to 'thank' 'sponsors'. One 'recommendation' after another

In some cases the 'content creators' ramble on and exaggerate so much when they attempt to deliver their sales pitch that it's likely they would be in breach of advertising standards (do these apply for social media?)

Endless health benefits of expensive essential oils, encouragement of veganism by randoms with no medical qualifications...the works

Do people follow this advice? Am I the only one who find this trend weird?

I don’t get that much on YouTube. It must be algorithm dependent. I watch a strange eclectic mixture but some of it is quite niche, so I probably shouldn’t say.

Are you watching quite mainstream stuff? Crunchy channels? Influencers?

MetellaInHortoEst · 26/11/2022 01:10

I do also freely use the “not interested” and “don’t show me content from this channel” buttons. Maybe that helps?

Crunchy channels? Influencers?

Yes, I sometimes watch these for entertainment or to unwind. They are riddled with 'sponsorships', 'look what I bought', etc

But I think this nonsense is creeping into the more 'educational' channels as well

I think maybe there is a bigger issue with monetisation. Some of the channels I follow have regular issues with being demonetised, and as a result they often have patreon.

The “Ask a Mortician” channel being an example I’ll own up to (nobody will identify me by that! 😆)

The sponsors seek out the YT creators. It's pretty standard. And YT easily demonetizss videos if they say one wrong word, so sometimes sponsors keep creators on their feet. Some of them do it for a living.

I doubt it'll become "teleshopping channel" since there's so much different kinds of content.

Nor do I think talking about a sponsor for a couple minutes constitutes "teleshopping." And there's not just unboxing videos on there.

I didn't know this, it sounds odd

I’m rapidly going off TikTok due to everyone trying to flog stuff.

Iamboredandgoingforatwix · 26/11/2022 07:50

I tend to watch stuff on economics or listen to some wellness stuff while working (doesn't really go in, but nice to have the company as im lonely in my job and rarely speak to people). I do get ads, but I don't listen to any channels who plug stuff during their clips. They are in it for the wrong reasons then. One chap i used to watch plugged FTX and we all know what happened there... that's a lesson to those people. Huge backlash and he looked a dick.

What annoys me is the ads being much louder than the material scaring the shit out of me. Fat Face and Smyths toys are literally stalking me on YouTube and to be honest, it's making me not want to buy from them. They need to know the mere exposure effect stops working with too much ad exposure and starts to draw negative associations after a while.

In a capitalist/consumerist society, everything is about selling.

This. The problem is that it seems to have become more prevalent and difficult to avoid. Also Youtubers who used to maybe sponsor one brand now try to fit 3 or 4 brands in a 15 minute video. It taints the whole channel and makes them sound completely fake

I agree also that it's usually the same brands all of them appear to be pushing. Very annoying

Also a new trend of crunchy types sponsoring big supermarket giants (in the US and UK)

I wonder what the followers think about this
