AIBU to think they should replace the damn top!

DS started school in September, we have 4 polo shirts with school logo from the local uniform shop. He wears one a day (PE on Friday). We are ten weeks into the year so likely worn 10 times. 3 polos are still pristine, one had a hole under the arm where the seam had come apart. To me, this is a quality issue with this particular top. The uniform shop say it’s wear and tear and today refused to replace it for me but instead repaired it. I had to hang around for half an hour whilst they did the repair, and then for even longer whilst they repaired a hole they had left/made whilst doing the initial repair. I queried their returns policy: they said they are within their rights to offer to repair and ‘they’ve been in business a long time’. AIBU to think this is a bit crap? Or is this normal service?

Our local uniform shop is crap, over priced and poor quality but they have a monopoly on it so get away with it

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 25/11/2022 19:45

Do you have to have the logo on them?
We had one with a logo that was used in emergencies, photos and events, and supermarket polos for the rest of the time.

YABU - the retailer is allowed to offer a repair or a replacement. Within 6 months though it would be for them to prove the damage was wear and tear, rather than you prove it wasn't.

I think you're lucky they even repaired it to be honest.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/11/2022 19:56

Well, from an environmental point of view I’d be happier with a repair than a replacement. But then also from
an environmental point of view I get as much wear as possible out of my children’s clothes, and don’t put them in fresh clothes every day! My washing pile is big enough as it is!

Mummieslncorporated · 25/11/2022 19:59

I think a repair is absolutely fine. Better than fine, actually. It should be encouraged. Would you rather they dumped a perfectly good top?

Grumpybutfunny · 25/11/2022 20:02

Repair is a lot more environmentaly friendly tho I wouldn't have even took it back would have just repaired it myself

Jemimapinotduck · 25/11/2022 20:05

I can't afford for my kids to wear a different top everyday! I would be happy with a repair but to be honest I wouldn't have even taken it back, would have just got my husband to do it

notnowB · 25/11/2022 20:20

I'd have been happy with the repair.

HotPenguin · 25/11/2022 20:23

Did you really try to return a 4 year old's top that is over 2 months old? Why not just sew the hole yourself?

cansu · 25/11/2022 20:24

School tops get a lot of wear. Kids do not sit nicely all day. I think that is actually OK.

TheTeddyBears · 25/11/2022 20:26

I'd have just tried to repair the polo shirt myself but I would imagine that you are right it's most likely not been put together properly in the first place. Think they are peppa my right in that they can repair rather than replace.

I bought school logo fleece for my little girl. She has only started wearing it now and on third use the zip came off. I did repair it but it's totally broke the next time she wore it. I'd be happy for them to repair it but I'm not even taking it back as I think they will be awkward about it and I don't have the receipt. It was £18.99 bloody waste of money she can still wear it but it will not zip now. I'm not going bk to that shop again I wasn't happy with the embroidery cld have been better. They also promised a 10% discount over a certain amount and I only realised when I was home she charged me the full amount!

Buttons0522 · 25/11/2022 20:28

Point taken re environmental impact, I hadn’t really considered that POV to be honest. The uniform will be passed onto sibling and then to the school thrift shop so more reason to demand the highest quality I’d say. Let’s hope the repair holds up.

Hats off to those who can repair at home, my sewing skills are certainly not up to it!

And yes, he wears clean uniform every day. With 50% of his time spent outdoors in the mud kitchen etc coupled with being a messy eater, he comes home filthy! Having enough tops for one a day means I only need to wash once per week. So swings and roundabouts for me with the environmental impact of that!

I had this exact same scenario this week. My son has worn his PE top x 6 times this year for about 45 mins a time, and the stitches have come apart.
I tried to return for a replacement and they refused and offered a

Buttons0522 · 25/11/2022 20:32

@HotPenguin Yes, I did. School uniform should be robust and durable. It has been worn probably 10 times. I do not have the means, skill or will to sew!!!

GrowingUpIsATrap · 25/11/2022 20:34

*repair. I didn't have time to drive to the other shop for them to repair it so will do it myself. It's clearly a quality issue.
I am so annoyed about it, our school has personalised tshirts and only one supplier in the whole area so I can't even refuse to go back because of the crap service.
They basically said they have a 21 day return policy which actually isn't the law, that's their made up policy. The law is 30 days for a refund due to quality / being faulty when you purchase.
It was way she patronising said it was probably the "boys pulling and grabbing each other" 🙄. No, it wasn't.

Buttons0522 · 25/11/2022 20:38

@GrowingUpIsATrap this place has 21 days too, probably the same chain! @Darthwazette is right, they have the monopoly so can basically do what they like!

How do people manage to send their kids in the same uniform for two days? My DD's polos are always filthy and she's 9 😂
