We are a household with 2 kids. Shedloads of laundry each week. There is a garden, but it's either raining, or so cold that the laundry comes back wetter than when it came out even in the sun.
We used to own a Drybuddy but it broke and anyways we could not afford to run it now with the cost of electricity. One clothes horse (we dont have space for much more really) in the kitchen does not do the trick as the clothes take a bit to dry...
I do realise there is no magic trick but maybe someone has some creative solutions for this, or also just wants to moan about wet laundry...

If too damp outside

MassiveSalad22 · 25/11/2022 17:45

Tumble dryer for big loads of clothes just bosh them in. Heated airer for nappies, smaller load of whites etc as I cba to hang a whole load on there, takes ages. Sheets over doors or on line if I’m sure it won’t rain. Have a dehumidifier but forget to put it on.
When I have my utility room I’m gonna get a SheilaMaid 😍

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 25/11/2022 17:49

I'd like to get a ceiling airer rigged up in the huge cavity above our stairs - obviously on a very long rope to let down for loading/unloading, but that strikes me as a huge area of wasted space.

In the meantime, we use an airer in the spare bedroom, next to the radiator and a cracked-open window, with a ceiling fan running.

fuckwhatshouldido · 25/11/2022 17:49

7 of us in the house (5 kids, 1 full time, 3 full time except every other weekend, (so full time for laundry purposes as their dirty stuff comes back with them) and 1 50/50, plus 6’2” DP and normal sized me!). We have 3 clothes horses, at least one is up permanently. Giant clothes horse takes a full wash, second wash goes on radiators, 3rd wash goes on 2nd/3rd clothes horses depending how much there is. In the spring all 3 airers go up in the garden and pretty much stay there til the end of autumn! I’ve just bought a dehumidifier and it’s not made much discernible difference to drying times but the house is much less wet so that’s a big plus, we were getting a bit damp. Heating goes on twice a day which is usually enough to dry whatever’s on rads. We also don’t wash anything that doesn’t genuinely need it!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/11/2022 17:49

@Merryoldgoat

Yeah it would be nice. A large heated area the size of my house😟

MintyGreenDreams · 25/11/2022 17:49

We have a logburner so it goes on an airer in the living room, dries in no time

Newpuppymummy · 25/11/2022 17:50

I just can’t imagine not using a tumble dryer. The house would be like a laundry constantly

BabyPotato · 25/11/2022 17:50

I have no idea if I'm doing this right, but currently I'm drying washing outside and finishing it off in our little lobby with a dehumidifier. The laundry seems proper dry afterwards and it shouldn't cost us a fortune. I also try to do less washing but still end up with a few loads a week due to us renovating our house and also having DC.

Comedycook · 25/11/2022 17:51

Heated airer

I never turn it off as I always have laundry to dry

Icannever · 25/11/2022 17:52

I do a slightly smaller load every day now, I do it in the evening and once the kids have gone to bed, I hang it on doors and chairs and clothes airer in the kitchen. In the morning I pop it all in the tumble drier and it just needs a little time in there to be dry.
Other ting I’m doing is thinking about what we wear and what towels we use more, so kids and dh wearing sports tops and fleeces if possible, some has school fleeces so nice and easy to dry. Have bought cheap thin towels from ikea, they dry really fast
Towels weren’t drying well in bathroom so I tumble dry them sometimes (for 20 minutes or so) and they last longer between washes
If it’s cold but windy and sunny I get all my sheets etc outside

diamondpony80 · 25/11/2022 17:53

40 minute cycle in the tumble drier and then hang up on clothes airer or radiators to finish off.

AriettyHomily · 25/11/2022 17:54

I have a tumble dryer but most of our clothes can't be tumbled, kids uniform, DH is in tech gear, my gym kit. This time of year has been the bane of my life for years. Not cold enough to have the heating on too much, can't get it dry outside. I send the towels / bedding to the launderette which helps a bit.

Our Victorian house is high ceilinged and we have massive condensation issues. Water drips down the walls in the kitchen if pans / oven on and windows not open. Dehumidifiers / heating make no difference,

NotMeNoNo · 25/11/2022 17:56

A ceiling airer in your warmest, best ventilated room. Even if it's the lounge above the tv. Something about the height/air circulation dries much faster than a floor standing clothes airer.
Also be selective about what you wash, if you aren't already.

luxxlisbon · 25/11/2022 17:57

Tumble dryer, I can only do a line dry on the weekends and obviously weather depending. The people who only dry their clothes outside obviously don’t work a 9-5.

blackberrytea82 · 25/11/2022 17:58

I bought a dehumidifier and run it next to my laundry rack, so far very impressed with the speed of drying - half a day vs. the two full days it was taking before.

allthecrooksandnannies · 25/11/2022 17:58

Anything I tumble dry shrinks. I never understand people suggesting a tumble drier for anything other than towels.

Prinnny · 25/11/2022 17:58

Tumble dryer, nice and simple! Hate pegging washing out, nearly as much as ironing it!

RedHelenB · 25/11/2022 17:58

Radiators

CecilyP · 25/11/2022 17:59

Can you reduce the quantity of washing by wearing clothes and using household linen a bit longer. Then, I’d recommend giving your wash a second spin before taking out of the machine. I also line dry all year round except when it’s pouring with rain or the air is very damp. Sunny or windy days get washing nearly dry even in winter. Don’t know what your house is like but when there were more of us, I also dried sheets on the upstairs bannister.

Ginglymostomatidae · 25/11/2022 18:02

Outside, all year round. Weather permitting.
That is bought in and put on an airer to dry overnight.

I do have a dry soon and a dehumidifier, which I'll set up in the spare room and shut the door. I'll run it for a few hours and leave to dry naturally

Um.... yeah. Obviously I don't peg my laundry at 7 before I leave, candles bring it in at 6 when I get back. Oh wait... yeah, I do.

No idea where the candles came from.

defi · 25/11/2022 18:11

Clothes airer and dehumidifier next to them. Gets them dry pretty quickly

BigChesterDraws · 25/11/2022 18:12

A fumble dryer. Always have done and always will.

BigChesterDraws · 25/11/2022 18:12

Tumble dryer!
