Strep A infection/Scarlet fever

Just read the terribly sad news about a child dying in Surrey. There's been recent cases in Kilmarnock and Surrey.

Clearly while serious outcomes from Strep A are rare, I thought it might be worth bearing in mind what the symptoms are:

'Symptoms include a rash, a sore throat, flushed cheeks and swollen tongue - known as 'strawberry tongue' because of its appearance.

If you think you, or your child, have scarlet fever, do seek medical help as soon as possible.

Early treatment with antibiotics is important as it helps reduce the risk of complications and the spread of the infection to others.'

Absolutely devastating - the poor family and community. I had scarlet fever as a child and still remember how unwell I felt (and the awful rash).

Thanks for the reminder about symptoms - so difficult to know what might be serious given there are so many different colds/coughs/sore throats doing the rounds at the moment.
