Problem at optician

Just wondering if anyone is about.

I had to get checked for new glasses and it was discovered something was wrong. It was the test where air blows out. I don’t know the details but it was too high. They did another test (apparently a better test) and it was higher. I think they said it was either 35 or 135 but I don’t know which one it would have been, I didnt hear properly but I know it ended in 35. The optician said I need to go to hospital and called a doctor. They actually booked me an appointment for tomorrow afternoon at 15.00. I was told to go to the emergency department if I become unwell during the night.

has anyone got any experience with this- i am feeling a bit nervous and unsure about what to expect. Is 35 or 135 very high and does anyone know what will happen when I go to the doctor?

I think it’s eye pressure and it’s 35. It can’t be 135.
Are you alone or do you have someone with you?

Sorry my post probably came too abrupt. They obviously thought that you’re ok to wait until tomorrow so it’s a good sign.

High pressure in your eye can lead to glaucoma and a few other things. It can be treated so keep your appt.

hi there,
(Didn’t want to read & run) I have no experience & my knowledge regarding vision is extremely limited but as far as I know the air test performed at opticians can be used to check for symptoms relating to glaucoma.
I appreciate it’s hard not to worry with them referring you to see a doctor - but it could be something as simple as you being prescribed eye drops and then being asked to retake the test at a later date to see if your eye pressure has reduced.
Have you been having any issues or was it just a standard appointment?

I’ve been referred to hospital several times by the optician and put on yearly check ups due to high pressure during tests. Each time I have been seen at the hospital, it has been outside of normal parameters but not enough to be concerned about. I was told that whilst I had higher than generally accepted pressure, this was normal for me and notes were added to prevent me being re-referred unless my normal pressure increases.

The pressure tests at the hospital we’re much nicer as they didn’t blow air at my eyes. They placed something against my eye which I barely felt (sounds much worse than it was) and I hate things near my eyes. Be prepared to have dilation drops/dyes applied so probably best not to drive to your appointment. I wasn’t told this, but as the appointment was on a Saturday, DH took me anyway.

Please don’t worry as there are treatments availed to help if needed.

Yes I was having issues. I was having migraine and my eyes have been painful at times. Good to know others have been and it was fine x

Hi there, I have what they call narrow angles in my eyes which means there is nowhere for the fluid in the eye to channel away to when the pressure increases (usually in the night more). I only discovered I had narrow angles during an optician's appointment and I was referred to the eye clinic at our teaching hospital.

I don't gave glaucoma but my condition is related to high pressure so it is similar in some ways. I wouldn't have known I had any issues unless I was told by the optician's, but around that time I was getting headaches and very sore achy eyes, along with halos around lights and cloudy vision when I woke up which was q classic sign of increased intraocular pressure over night.

I had a laser iridotomy eye procedure to help make an extra hole in both eyes and it's all been ok since. I won't need eye drops as my eye condition is called narrow angle glaucoma, as opposed to open glaucoma which is more common. If the holes in my eyes close, I might need a cataracts operation eventually though.

Just realised I said my condition is narrow angle glaucoma when it isn't 🙃 I don't need to use eye drops to lower the pressure like people with open glaucoma do. Mine is just narrow angles .

My dad was diagnosed with glaucoma in his 30s. He takes his medication, has a 3 yearly battle with the DVLA, but this year was the first in 50(!) years he’s had to get a new prescription for his lens. So it’s not all doom and gloom.

@NooNooHead1981 hi ,I know this a slightly old thread but the same -
I only discovered I had narrow angles during an optician's appointment and I was referred to the eye clinic at our teaching hospital.-thing has just happened to me .
What I can't understand is why the narrow drainage channels were never noticed in any of the many previous eye exams .
Maybe it's something they only look for if they are thinking of dilating pupils .But as it's a risk factor for glaucoma and easily sorted that seems odd .

Hiya - I had similar a few years ago - in Specsavers they noticed something with the optic nerve and told
me
To go to eye hosp immediately.
there was a buildup of calcium there which can be common and so my eyes will always flag this now but as above it’s normal for me.
im no longer under eye hosp and have even gone onto have corrective eye surgery (non related) and went for my eye test this week and all ok as they are aware. They always do the more intense test to photograph the back and compare test on year but no issues and now have 20/20 from -8.5 after lasek.

Hope that helps put your mind at ease overnight x
