Am I a fraud?/Are you a fraud?

AIBU for feeling like a fraud? Just watched the late night news article on Iran and the poor wee children murdered over the last month. It made me feel sick.

Then thought of the World Cup and the poor human rights and poor migrant workers who have died (and their families) and I said I wasn’t going to watch it because of these human rights violations.

Anyway, I work in education and all the kids are watching it, there’s no discussion around why the shouldn’t watch it and I’ve found myself watching some of it.

I still feel disgusted by the whole thing. What’s wrong with us? I genuinely believe most of us feel the same collective responsibility to human life, and doing the right thing. Why do we turn a blind eye? Why don’t we feel more confident to say, fuck you, if this was my child, I’d want the weight of the world behind it… and I feel like that’s what we should give, ie do not watch the World Cup… etc etc… little bits of support… to build a wave of change.

I truly believe I’m a fraud… and I’m sad to think this is the majority of the population too, and we want to change it, we just don’t know how 🤷‍♀️

Even M&S and such had concerns raised about their supply chains so plenty to boycott

Indeed.. I doubt the OP has ever attended or watched a football match in her life so no great loss she is " boycotting it". No reply to my question on if she boycotts countries that have engaged in war crimes and their matches strangely enough. 💩

She's a hypocrite. She's typing from an electrical device of some sort that was made by parts put together by people (including children) from poor countries for pennies. As am I. Am I a fraud? Are you a fraud, OP?

Toastandavocado · 27/11/2022 00:07

Exactly as I said, we’re all frauds, my original question was about watching the World Cup, specifically being a fraud around that. I’m unsure where the level of anger has come from, unless of course you were already boycotting avocados and technical devices, and M&S, and thought I couldn’t see the bigger picture. Or perhaps replying on mumsnet about a topic, but making comments about… actually nothing to do with the direct topic, makes you feel a bit better about yourself. I don’t know why (as it’s constant), but I’m still astounded by the fuckwittery on here.

I don't follow football, but it's not for any ethical reason, it's just not something that interests me. I agree with pp, we could all find hypocrisy in our values compared to the things we do, if we dug deep enough. We can only do the best we can, within the constraints of having to get through daily life in a way that's tolerable, without going mad.

SueVineer · 27/11/2022 00:35

no country has a perfect human rights record. It’s utterly hypocritical and a bit racist to pick on the quataris- the last World Cup was in Russia. It’s generally better to engage with countries to persuade rather than boycotting. Also as someone who comes from a religious minority - not all women necessarily see themselves as oppressed in Qatar. Im not saying I agree with them but it’s up to them to decide how to live their lives not me.

Toastandavocado · 27/11/2022 00:41

Agreed, but there will be certain things that strike a chord, that directly make you question your morals, the World Cup being a very significant one. Of course there’s every day injustices that in an ideal world we would take a stance against but as you say, that would drive us mad. So, taking a stance against things such as the World Cup, gives us a chance to oppose the many injustices in the world on an international level. It’s a platform. Not eating avocados for breakfast, or one person not using their iPhone, or one person burning pistachios in their back garden… not so much.

I’m sure some of the women don’t “see” themselves as oppressed. They “decide how to live their lives” hmm 🤔

No, that's why people have repeatedly pointed out to you that it's hypocritical to single out the World Cup when other practices are going on. Why is you using a technical device made by slave conditioned labour (including child workers) more moral than watching the world cup? Can you explain?

Toastandavocado · 27/11/2022 00:58

I think I did in my post above. There are many many every day injustices but there are certain times we get to address them collectively and on an international level. Does that help?

Not really, no. I guess I’m just still astounded by all the fuckwittery being wittered on about.

You typed that reply on a device made by people in a third world country which earned them about 10 pence an hour, some of them children. Can you justify?

BosaNova · 27/11/2022 08:39

The only reason everyone is twisting themselves into various righteous shapes over the worldcup is because the locals are brown.
Bring back the crusades to civilise the barbars! Eh.

Meanwhile bunch of us is boycotting Boohoo group, MG and various other brands but that's just not cool enough isn't it. Interestingly most who screech about Qatar have no issue with other places doing very similar things because in that places the brown are the opress. And that's totally ok, isn't it...

Toastandavocado · 27/11/2022 10:06

I was more concerned over women’s rights. You sound very angry.
