Is this heating bill normal?

Just want to know if this sounds reasonable....

Family of 5, 2 adults, 1 teen, toddler twins. 4/5 bed detached.

Twins home all day 3 days a week (nursery the other 4)

Teen home all day weekends and school the other 5.

Us, home most days, DH usually WFH and me some part time work (online seller), with usually a TV on, and heating set to come on at below 21c.

Gas central heating. Electric everything else.

Our precise bill (smart meter) for the last calendar month is £470. £220 electric, £270 gas.

Does this sound vaguely in line with what others are getting billed? A bit toppy, or ridiculously too much? Or indeed, cheap compared to other people in similar circumstances?

Small 3 bed terrace and my electric is £130.

Kfjsjdbd · 24/11/2022 20:03

We have a similar sized house. 2 wfh adults and 2 kids (in school/nursery). We aren’t careful at all and our bill for gas and elec last month was £279

Heating on at 21° 24/7???🤯

Yes so when it reaches that, it flicks off, so it's on and off

Ours was 430 last month- large 4 bed house

VestaTilley · 24/11/2022 20:04

Is your heating on throughout the day?? You only need an hour in the morning, 1.5 hours at night and an hour in the day if your toddlers are at home.

Probably about right for a 4/5 bed house at the moment though.

Butterflyfluff · 24/11/2022 20:04

Blimey. -21 degrees on your heating will be the problem.

18 degrees is more than enough

TwinsAndTiramisu · 24/11/2022 20:05

Oh and it's off overnight from 9pm to 6.30 am

You need to reduce your thermostat!! And then the heating off at night completely!

footballfootballfootball · 24/11/2022 20:05

Is the heating on at night?

ChuckMater · 24/11/2022 20:05

Why do you need your heating set so high?!

footballfootballfootball · 24/11/2022 20:05

Cross posted Wink

Punxsutawney · 24/11/2022 20:06

Ours was £400 last month, similar size house, but no central heating on. We do though have two electric cars and one had to be charged daily.

It is off overnight. If it's set to under 20c then the house feels absolutely freezing 🥶

if I set my hearing to come on under 21 my bill for similar size house would be huge. Mine is set for under 20 between 5am-8am and 4.15-7.45pm and the rest of the time it’s now set to come on if under 16. If I’m cold I’ll probably put it on, but I’ve got a heated throw to use first when working at home (2 days at home, rest in office) and a log burner. So I’m hoping not to put it on during the day until it’s much much colder.

PARunnerGirl · 24/11/2022 20:08

I agree you should turn your heating off at night. I am also most comfy at 21 🥶😁 But I at least have my settings at 18 and then bump it up manually if I need to. But it’s only “on” like that between 7am and 9pm, switching on and off as the temp drops below 18-21 (depending on how much I’ve sneaked it up!).

70billionthnamechange · 24/11/2022 20:08

Under 20 low enough. Ours is 15 at night so it only comes on if it's REALLY cold

notdaddycool · 24/11/2022 20:08

October was £188 for family of 4 in 3 bed Victorian. An hour of central heading to 19 in the morning and a couple of hours at night.

70billionthnamechange · 24/11/2022 20:09

God my post makes no sense. Ignore me, I've had a few wines

AltheaVestr1t · 24/11/2022 20:09

Mine is looking like it will be £360 this month. 3 adults, 1 tween, someone home nearly every day. The thermostat is usually on 19 unless we are feeling particularly chilly.

PARunnerGirl · 24/11/2022 20:09

Sorry Op, just saw your post about it being off overnight!

Zanatdy · 24/11/2022 20:09

Mine will be around £330 this month I think, judging my the reading I just took. £66 off that - I’ve got £400 in credit thankfully

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/11/2022 20:09

Why does it matter what anyone else pays?

They aren't you living your life in your house, energy use isn't some kind of comparison exercise

If you think the cost is too much use all the absolute masses of energy saving advice online and cut down. If you're happy with what you pay then carry on.

HappyHolidai · 24/11/2022 20:09

Is that for October? Or November.
Mine was £32 for electric and £50 for gas for October. Just 1 person, 3-bed semi. So yours sounds very high. November will ll be a lot more for gas but not a huge amount more for electric. Do you have heaters on all the time and use the tumble dryer all the time?

OddBoots · 24/11/2022 20:11

If you can afford to keep it that warm then it sounds fine.
