AIBU To Think That Christmas Hampers Are A Con & A Waste Of Money

I was idly looking at Christmas hampers online this evening and I was shocked by the cost. Well, not so much the cost, but what you got for the money.

A Highgrove £75 hamper just contains marmalade, jam, tea, shortbread and fudge. You also get the basket, I suppose, but it doesn't seem value for money at all.

A Fortnum's £75 hamper is a little better because you get some chocolate and mints as well. LOL.

Does anyone think they're worth buying? Am I a Grinch?

Ah we used to get a Christmas hamper when I was a kid in the 80s. My mum paid a friend £2 a week for it, I remember her little money bag and note. It came with a 'bonus' fruit hamper.
A happy memory.

One of them did - Farepak back in 2006 - it caused a huge scandal. Christmas cancelled for folk who'd saved up all year Sad. There's now legislation in place as a result of this that means money paid into 'Christmas Club' schemes has to be ring fenced.

I think the OP was referring to luxury hampers, which are a different thing.

Ah yes, absolutely terrible for those impacted. Good to hear there is legislation now in place.

Yes, I was definitely referring to luxury hampers.

The smallest ones which the King produces (Highgrove) cost £75 and contain jam, marmalade, fudge, tea and shortbread.

Not so much as a small bottle of wine!

You’re right OP, but they’re a godsend for well off people with little imagination when it comes to present buying.

My grandparents got us one once, from M&S I think. It was okay, most of the stuff I didnt like.

My the wicker basket/suitcase style thing has really come in handy and is used every Christmas to deliver the kids xmas eve PJs as if by magic.

I just ordered walkers shortbread hampers for some friends, they look nice, overpriced maybe but I got a black friday discount so not too bad.
