To Discharge Myself from Hospital?

Came in half 12 lunchtime for reduced fetal movements (so almost 9.5 hours ago). Baby is fine, was false alarm, his heart and ticker tape readings are fine.

BUT they say I have a pulse of over 100, and an "infection marker of 10" in my blood. Does it matter? I'm knackered and want to go to bed, plus have to get up at 6am with toddler. AIBU to just go? I'm 35 weeks btw.

Also very aware of being in hospital with lots of potentially germy people - knowing my luck the infection marker will be irrelevant but I'll get bloody Covid or something for when I have my baby.

Please don’t discharge yourself. They don’t keep you in hospital for the fun of it, they are considering you may have an infection and will likely want to start a course on antibiotics.

christmastrike · 23/11/2022 21:55

I think during pregnancy if they think you're better off being monitored than you are. I'd stay. There's such little space atm they wouldn't be keeping you there for no reason!
Best of luck.

My experience of similar and being discharged without it being investigated was a PROM due to infection and premature birth. I would personally wait a bit to see how things go.

NiceTwin · 23/11/2022 21:57

I wouldn't be discharging myself, they don't keep people in hospital for the hell of it.

fudgecat · 23/11/2022 21:57

Just consider the worse case cenario then think about what you should do

Thedogscollar · 23/11/2022 21:58

Re infection marker is this your CRP at 10 as that is not significantly raised and a heart rate of 100bpm overall not worrying could be a bit dehydrated sitting in hospital for hours or simple anxiety.
In our unit if ctg is normal and this is first episode of reduced movements you would be discharged home with advice.

Which is exactly why OP shouldn’t self discharge. We don’t know full medical history and there will be a reason this lady hasn’t just been discharged home with advice.

Thedogscollar · 23/11/2022 22:03

If you are still in hospital OP I'm curious as to why they took bloods from you as you attended for reduced movements. We're your observations temp b/p also abnormal maybe abnormal urinalysis.
What is their plan of care for you? Are they admitting you to antenatal ward for obs overnight?

Cw112 · 23/11/2022 22:05

I would just wait there to be honest, they'll not want you in any longer than you have to be with the way things are either. I'd try and ask someone there what your results mean and why are they worried and that might help you decide?

You're right we don't know the full medical history or obstetric history so on that note OP will not get the right answer on MN. Talk to the midwives and medics OP ask them what your plan of care is and why.

maryberryslayers · 23/11/2022 22:08

Just sit tight. Hospitals don't keep you for no reason. If anything went wrong you'd never forgive yourself. Are you in a bed?
Is your toddler with their father, text to let him know you won't be able to be up at 6 so he will have to arrange to cover you.

QS90 · 23/11/2022 22:14

I'm still waiting as they apparently need a doctor to decide what to do, but none have been free for over 6 hours.

The pregnancy has been healthy, except for the current increased pulse, and the blood markers. There are so many people here in the beds waiting, and a load more in the waiting room who can't even get a bed 😕

Follow medical advice. A few hours discomfort is worth it for making sure your baby is safe. I know you’re tired and want to go home but hold in there. See if you can get someone to explain exactly what they’re worried might be happening so you can make a more informed decision.

Sounds like our triage unit OP.
Usually one registrar on at night and one SHO tho it will be the reg who decides your care plan.
Without seeing all your blood results it's difficult to say why you have been kept waiting 10hrs. As you say ctg all fine and baby moving.
Hope you will be seen soon and transferred to ward or discharged home.

As frustrating as it is, your notes need to be properly reviewed by a doctor before they can discharge you. Unfortunately your increased pulse and raised CRP could be indicative of infection.
I don’t think any episodes of reduced fetal movement should be labelled as a “false alarm” as such. Baby’s can recover from episodes of distress. Even if baby is appearing well on monitoring now, that’s not to say there wasn’t something going on during the period of reduced movement. That’s why when women have repeated episodes of reduced movement it is investigated even if baby appears well on CTG monitoring. That, combined with the possibility of an infection present, means you should definitely be assessed by an obstetrician.
They’re doing the right thing, I know you’re tired but hang in there. Hopefully all is well, they can discharge you with reassurance and you can get home and rest as soon as possible.

QS90 · 23/11/2022 22:44

Okay thanks all, you make some good points and I will (reluctantly) stay.

@Pjsandhotchoc That's really interesting and informative, I never knew.

If they are that rammed then it’s even more important to stay. If they are that short of beds and want you to stay to rule out infections then of course you don’t leave. It sucks but don’t take the risk.
