I'm not particularly interested in the world Cup so I suppose I write this as a non fan outsider. I've seen a fair bit in the news about people not being allowed to wear rainbow accessories or armbands supporting LGBT etc rights. But this is Qatar, a country where being gay is illegal. I think it's pretty safe to say that challenging them is pointless. And, as much as I may personally disagree with their stance, they have their own laws. Is this not FIFA disrespecting the LGBT community by awarding it to Qatar in the first place? I'm just not sure why people are now expecting Qatar to fall into line with what we want? I feel like we kinda knew the "rules" before the event so protest now is a bit redundant. If people felt that strongly they should have refused to play/spectate in such a country.
And yes I am also aware of the thousands that died building these stadiums which is a whole other issue! But given all that how can anyone justify supporting yet (mildly) protesting this event? Is football really so important to people to set aside their morals?
