Turning IKEA Kura bed into high position at 4.5 years

Deedippy · 23/11/2022 17:13

Dd is 4 1/2 and has the ikea kura bed currently in the lower position but is desperate for a higher bed. Also would be handy to have the space underneath. Friend mention recommended age is 6 for a high sleeper so aibu to flip it over as she's only 4 1/2

Also wondering if it will hold a 4 year old and an adult at story time 🤔

We flipped it when our son was 3 🤣

We didn't realise that there was a recommended age until we saw the little sticker a couple years later.

He has lived to tell the tale x

Oh and yes, My husband and 8 year old lie in it together all the time xx

44PumpLane · 23/11/2022 18:41

I wouldn't as there is a reason that higher beds and bunks aren't recommended for children under 6.

I have twins and my life would be made so much simpler to stick them in bunk beds, they are 6 soon and I still won't be putting them in bunks.

Clearly loads and loads of children do sleep in high beds or bunks from the age of 2 or 3, and you might feel it will work for your child though.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't put her in a bunk bed but this one is much lower than that. Will give it some thought. Thanks

My ds was in one from 3 - it has slightly raised sides so he never got close to tipping out. It's not so high that you can't reach to tuck them in, or lift them in if they've fallen asleep in the car!

I quite often shared with him or climbed in for a cuddle or story.

Roundmywaythe · 23/11/2022 21:39

I think the weight limit is 15 stone or something. We sit underneath for story time.

if they’re a sensible 4.5 year old I wouldn’t be too worried, it’s not very high. They have to understand no jumping etc on it though

Choconuttolata · 23/11/2022 21:41

Dd1 was in a high bunk from age 4.5 with stairs because ds was born and needed the cot bed, and dd2 moved into the bottom bunk. That was higher than a Kura Bed. She was fine although dd2 who was 2 at the time was a nightmare and kept climbing up onto her bed, at one point we considered putting in soft play safety netting!

DS has a Kura Bed and we used Trofast as stairs rather than the ladder in between the wall and the bed to provide a safer route down. He went in to it on the higher bunk configuration at around 6 years old but he is delayed in his development, so more like 4.5 years at that age and he has been fine.

Base it on your child, if they are quite sensible, not likely to wake and need the toilet at night and coordinated enough to get down steps whilst half asleep if poorly then it should be fine.

flooflo · 23/11/2022 21:43

I bought this for my DS on his 3rd birthday and he's slept in it fine as a high sleeper since then

Strokethefurrywall · 23/11/2022 21:44

We flipped when our younger was 3 as well. They're not particularly high and he was a cautious 3 year old.

DS1 I wouldn't have because he was a fearless hellion who would have jumped off it. As it was, he didn't get his kura bed until he was 6 so less of an issue.

bigshoutingday · 23/11/2022 21:48

It wouldn't have occurred to me there was a weight limit. It's the same slats whichever way up you have it so if an adult and child don't come crashing through it the low way then you'll be fine high up!

Thanks for asking the question tho OP, I was planning on putting my two in it when they are 4 and 2.5 with the older one above and the younger on his cot mattress below to begin with, or possibly on a single sticking out at right angles but I do fear the temptation of them jumping from top bunk to lower bed if I do that!

Roundmywaythe · 23/11/2022 21:54

Just checked it’s 220lbs

Alloftheboys · 23/11/2022 22:11

Agree with poster that said trofast. We’ve got the 3 steps version for both our boys.
Oldest had it in the high position from about 4. He wouldn’t have been able to use the ladder at that age.

Thank you everyone this has been really helpful. Will have a happy 4 year old dd as we will flip it next week! She's quite physically able and although totally bonkers is cautious with physical stuff

Bugger! Just realised I have no idea where we put the slats for the ladder. Hoping I just shoved them underneath!!

Depends on the kid - how sensible they are and how good/confident they are at climbing the ladder. We had ours in the high position for our eldest from 3 and a half because she’s very careful, isn’t inclined to bounce and has never fallen. I wouldn’t do the same for my youngest though as she’s much more physically daring and has no sense of risk.
