Aibu in thinking that people are more likely to drive up your arse in a 20 zone?

In my local area all the roads are 20mph. Annoying but safer! I feel like people are more likely to be driving right up behind me to try to get me to go faster in 20 zones than in a 30 or 40 zone elsewhere. Aibu?

I suppose correlation doesn't equal causation, maybe my fellow townspeople are just particular arseholes???

@user764329056 no it's not.

My cousin tailgates all the time. I find it really uncomfortable being in the passenger seat of her car when she intimidates the slow driver in front of her.

I have to say our 20 zone here is pretty good but we live rurally and without fail there is always someone up my arse on the 50/60mph country roads. These roads are so bendy, poorly lit and have frequent accidents but even on parts safe to drive the limit, there’s always some daft melon there! Do they seriously think we’ll speed up?

KrisAkabusi · 24/11/2022 11:23

Logically, the stopping distance is shorter, so they can drive closer to you.

Another issue is that it's not all roads in the area. you'll have a multitude of roads at 20 and then a cross road will still be 30.

I always seem to find that my windscreen needs urgently washing when someone is driving too close. They soon drop back.

The arseholes who drive up your bumper will do it whether the limit is 20, 30, 40 or 50.

In 20 mph areas, I find the worse are the school mums rushing around to drop off/pick up their darling offspring, they just can't wait to overtake to get the parking space a few feet closer to the school so they don't have to walk as far!

I also think there's a fundamental problem in that a lot of the 20mph limits aren't legally enforceable, i.e. the council have only put up the signs, and not gone through the legal process to impose by-laws for those streets. People know that so they know they're "legally" entitled to ignore the unenforceable 20mph speed limits.

Brake-checking is also good to wake them up and get them to back off!

People can drive closer at 20mph than 30mph because the stopping distance is shorter.

They should still be 12 metres away from you of course, any closer than that and they're still a twat - but a twat is a twat at 20mph just as much as at any other speed.

I've noticed this but more it depends which car I'm in. I traded in my 1 series recently for a mini (not a slow one either) tits seem to think it's okay to ride my rear when I have it out (I don't drive slow), yet out in DH's car which is obviously quick and they don't do it even at the same speed. Best bit is the mini is actually a debadged John cooper works.
