Light hearted thread no I’m not having a whinge before anyone asks 😂No -I’m just curious. Was chatting to a work colleague and she mentioned that her children have never been to school on their birthdays. They don’t fall within school holidays. She was a bit surprised when I said mine all went to school on the day -business as usual. Don’t get me wrong -they had pressies before school, lovely parties and so on . Never really thought about it before but just wondered if its school or not on the big day

Never, its always in the holidays.

Forever42 · 23/11/2022 06:50

I teach KS1. All the kids come in on their birthdays - there is a birthday icon on the register next to their names so you can see if they are absent. They usually bring in sweets to share.

Coolyule · 23/11/2022 06:53

My sons birthday is in the summer holidays which works well for him because he is not a massive fan of attention. My daughter adores lots of attention and going to school on her birthday is the best thing ever to her! She gets to be the helper of the day, have happy birthday sung to her, wear a birthday badge so everyone wishes her happy birthday wherever she goes… 😂 this might change when she’s older but she’ll still
be going in on her birthdays as a teen, it hasn’t occurred to me to let her have a day off

Yes, except this year my 16 yr old DS begged me not to send him for fear of getting “birthday beats”. Basically, you get thumped / whacked by the other boys 16 times (or however old you are). I thought he was exaggerating, but my older DS told me it was a thing and he was glad his birthday had always fallen in half term. I let him stay off as he was obviously scared and had been worrying about it for a week.

Independent school?

PinkButtercups · 23/11/2022 06:59

No.

Independent school?

Lol, No! Sink comp!

TimBoothseyes · 23/11/2022 07:01

I sent her although her birthday occasionally fell on a BH.

Oysterbabe · 23/11/2022 07:05

Both mine are in the holidays but I would absolutely send them otherwise.

TwiceAsNice22 · 23/11/2022 07:05

My dd’s have the day off school on their birthday and I take the day off work! Luckily they are twins, so it’s just one day. They are still little and want the day off and we always have a lovely day together 😊

canyouextrapol · 23/11/2022 07:07

Of course they go, I've never taught my kids that school is optional

My kids’ birthdays always fall in the school holidays so we don’t have this issue. But my birthday also falls in the holidays and I always felt a bit ripped off - I would have liked to go to school on my birthday! I imagine my kids would be the same, happy to be with their friends.

Exactly this! I'm an Aug birthday and my ds is too. I always felt like I missed out, as does he. My dd's birthday is in Feb and can sometimes fall in half term - she complains bitterly when that happens. She likes the birthday rituals in school.

RedHelenB · 23/11/2022 07:09

They went to school. For one if them, their birthday sometimes fell in school holidays. They liked to waer a badge and the teachers saying happy birthday and bringing sweets fir the class etc.

Notjustabrunette · 23/11/2022 07:11

One child’s birthday is in the school holidays. I actually feel a bit sad for him though as my other child really liked going to school on their birthday. They get to wear a badge, the class signs happy birthday to them and they get to sweets out.

TimBoothseyes · 23/11/2022 07:14

DrLecter · 22/11/2022 23:49

My birthday falls in the middle of August. I am an academic so have never been outside of schools then universities (bit sad really!) Itbmeans I have never had to work on my birthday in my entire life!

Me neither...Mine's December 25th.

Notanotherone6 · 23/11/2022 07:14

Well, yeah. With a badge, and a bag of sweets for the class. I don't know why people let their kid stay at home.

Looks like it's just us then @TwiceAsNice22 ! 😂 Unless I've missed One other...

My two 7&9 have never gone in on their birthdays, but seems like the difference is that they both Hate school generally anyhow 😕 there is no way I'm sending them in on their special day! Most other days they beg and wheedle to not go in but get refused so I don't think it's bad to keep them off that one day...
They get to choose whatever they want to do throughout the day, although it's normally absolutely nothing 😂 just chilling at home (both winter/early spring babies).

I usually just call them in unwell 🤷🏼‍♀️ none had ever questioned it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/11/2022 07:15

Of course

thelobsterquadrille · 23/11/2022 07:15

LoopyGremlin · 23/11/2022 06:43

@thelobsterquadrille
I am a teacher so can't book my birthday off! School is open so myself and pupils are expected to be there.

Just because you're restricted by the school term, doesn't mean everyone else is though.

Loads of adults book their birthdays off as annual leave. I used to take the whole week off sometimes!

GrumpyMummy123 · 23/11/2022 07:17

Yes of course. I've got a 9yr old. Never even consider he should have the day off. If it's a school day it's a work day! He wants to be with his friends not stuck at home with me while I'm working. I try to make sure he has a 'its my birthday badge' to wear so gets a bit of a fuss at school. Then takes in sweets to hand out at end of the day (controversial I know - but it's acceptable at his current class!). Presents in the morning before school, possibly friends round for birthday tea or we'll go out for dinner/do special dinner)/ his choice of takeaway etc. Little party at a weekend either side (apart from the couple of years of COVID).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/11/2022 07:18

It wouldn’t have occurred to me not to.
When I was very small, back in the Dark Ages, teachers used to make you a little ‘crown’ of flowers on your birthday. Mine was early Feb so if anything it was snowdrops, but very pretty.

Notplayingball · 23/11/2022 07:18

I take cakes into school and let them get on with it. Two have birthdays during term time, two have birthdays during summer holidays.

ShandaLear · 23/11/2022 07:19

Noo, going to school on your birthday is one of the best bits of your birthday. Mine always wore the badges they got on the cards and everyone sang happy birthday. It’s exciting and fun.

Namechanger965 · 23/11/2022 07:20

I have 3 DC. One born in what has so far always been the Easter holiday or the training day after, one in the summer and one in the October holidays. My birthday is also in the summer holidays and I work in education so i’ve never been to school or work on my birthday.

On the very rare occasion that the Easter DCs birthday falls on a school day I’ll send them in. I wouldn’t allow birthdays off and most of the children I’ve taught are in on their birthday.

Toomanysquishmallows · 23/11/2022 07:21

All my three have always gone in on their birthdays , the younger two have never been particularly keen on school , but they have always gone in .

9nine · 23/11/2022 07:22

Yep always gone in on their birthdays, oldest two are in holidays so they never did, but the rest always have. They love it, in primary they take sweets in to share with the class, wear a badge and my eldest daughters had a birthday tiara they used to wear!
