How do people afford to start driving?

I've never driven to to illness.

My Husband finally wants to learn (he's 36!)
Just done insurance quotes for a random car (2011 vauxhall zafira)

And the cheapest quote is £5k!!
Five thousand pounds.

I looked at insurance for my 17 year old son, as he wants to start his lessons. His lowest quote is £3.9k!

Ive saved £1.3 to give him towards driving. Once he's had his lessons and test it's going to leave nothing.

Definitely not enough for a car or insurance.

I know it may sound stupid but I've never had anyone in the house that drives so never knew how much insurance costs.

DP has put down a £200 deposit on a block of lessons and I don't even know if he should bother now :(

How on earth could we afford to buy a car, and pay £5k for insurance.

I could cry. I've wanted him to drive for so long :(

Son 21 just passed his test he's having my mini convertible insurance 2k. My advice is find a physical insurance broker office and go to see them. You get better deals.

How do people afford to drive?

  1. You learn to drive when you are younger e.g. like your 17 year old is doing
  1. You wait until you get a full time job before you get a car e.g. so your 17 waits until he finishes full time education
  1. You work out which cars are low insurance for your age group e.g. for your 17 year old it would be something like an estate, there as for your husband it would be a small car like a Corsa or a Fiat 500. You still cry because low insurance is over £1k
  1. You don't have any accidents for 5 years and your insurance price should decrease a lot. (And you get over aged 25 and your insurance will decrease.)

If you pass your test, wait a year and then apply for insurance, it drops by about £1000

It is expensive, but if you can afford it get the lessons, get your DS through his test. You don’t need to get him a car- just join a club like Zipcar where you can hire cars by the hour for any big trips until your DS can afford to buy his own and pay his own insurance.

Many people buy cars on finance for this reason, but insurance will be expensive for a few years until he can prove he’s a sensible driver.
