Why is only men's sport shown in schools?

Littlebird43 · 22/11/2022 14:03

I have no objection with a schools screening occasional major sporting events (quite a few including ours seem to have allowed kids to watch World Cup yesterday) and I think it is great to celebrate sport and international events. However I am increasingly annoyed that this only seems to apply to men's sports. My kids have never been given the option to watch women's sport.
I'm not sure whether to be a pain in the a*e and mention this to the head teacher?
Yes - we should call out this example of gender inequality!
No - it's just football and I'm over thinking it...

What women's sport is on during school hours? I can't think of any at all. If you're talking about the Euros earlier this year then the matches weren't on in school hours

Changeyncchange · 22/11/2022 14:10

I would have been fucking livid if my kids were still at school and watching the world cup. The answer is to not show it at all, not show the women's too.

Itsbiasedhere · 22/11/2022 14:11

Because that is the interest level. How many people watch Manchester United Vs arsenal in the men's and women's game respectively it's a huge discrepancy dispute the women's sport being cheaper. biology matters as Mumsnet users tell us regularly and people want to watch the pinnacle of sport (the strongest the fastest the most able) which is often but not always mens sport. And why women's and para sports don't get the same coverage.

noblegiraffe · 22/11/2022 14:13

Which other men’s sports has the school shown?

euff · 22/11/2022 14:14

Aside from this match have any other fixtures actually been shown in schools? I can't recall any myself but maybe wrong.

GreenWheat · 22/11/2022 14:14

What major women's sporting events have been shown during school hours that you feel you have missed out on? The only sporting event that has been shown during school hours was yesterday's one and only match of the world cup involving England that will be taking place during school hours. Literally no other events, men or women. Can you give examples of other men's events that your school has shown and the women's ones you think they should have? So much fuss over two hours of school time....

HelloSunshine11 · 22/11/2022 14:15

My son's primary school took two full year groups on a free school trip to watch the women's rugby league. They're ace.

FloydPepper · 22/11/2022 14:16

Im pretty sure if the women’s World Cup were being played in school hours my kids schools would do the same as they do for the mens

my daughters school took them to watch a women’s match during the euros.

TottersBlankly · 22/11/2022 14:18

Interesting … I clearly recall having women’s singles and doubles Wimbledon matches shown at my girls’ school in the 70s!

RedAppleGirl · 22/11/2022 14:19

Women's competitions in the Olympics and the women has always attracted attention.

I personally feel women's football and the rugby isn't very good. Physical it maybe, it just doesn't have the same comparative skill or excitement.
As sorry.

I meant women's athletics.

DDs teacher showed some Womens Rugby highlights last week after finding out that some of the boys were disbelieving that DD played for local team (with the boys as they are Primary age!).

But tournaments during school time are quite rare for Mens and Womens teams. The Lionesses success was celebrated in school.

Floralnomad · 22/11/2022 14:27

If UK women were doing something worthy of seeing during the school day I’m sure they would show it . I remember in 1977 having to sit in the school hall to watch Virginia Wade in the Wimbledon final , it was boring as hell .

I haven't watched rugby (men's or women's) but I don't agree with you at all about women's football. The level of skill these days is excellent and the Lionesses played some very exciting games during the Euros.

My DD watched some of the England game at school yesterday, and in assembly the deputy head said in assembly "I think it was the women's World Cup recently and they did quite well 🙄".

Anyway, I think it's okay to show a bit of the football, as long as they give the same treatment to big moments in women's sport if it happens to be on during school hours. They also had a good discussion at school about Qatar and how people are treated differently there.

Sorry I don't agree. The USA women team were beaten by a u15 boys team in Dallas.
The standard is not even adult male Sunday level.
Tennis, swimming athletics etc has always been well received.

melj1213 · 22/11/2022 14:40

YABU as you're creating an issue of sexism where none exists.

Can you tell me which Women's World Cup games you would have liked the children to have watched at school during the last WWC?

Bearing in mind that the last WWC was in 2019 and England Women's WCs fixtures were played on Sunday 9th June 2019 at 18:00, Friday 14th and Wednesday 19th of June 2019 at 21:00 (Group games); Sunday 23rd June at 17:30 (R16); Thursday 27th June at 21:00 (QF); Tuesday 2nd July at 21:00 (SF) and Saturday 6th July 17:00 (3rd place play off)

An England mens international game happening during the school day happens once every four years at the most but usually only once every few decades (Last one was 2002 so 20 years ago, the one before that was 1998 so 4 years previously) and afaik has never occured in the women's game so as soon as it does, I'm sure it will be addressed.

GoonerGirl5231 · 22/11/2022 14:46

It's not sexist. The time difference means the men's matches are being shown during the daytime and like it or not, the men's game has always been more popular. Many of the women's previous tournaments barely got any air time, but I reckon the balance will tilt when the women's World Cup is on, after the Lionesses' Euros win.

They were beaten because they were male, had the advantages of male bodies and puberty.

This is why mediocre men are able to get to a high level in women's sports (Laurel Hubbard) and why women's sports need to be protected.

It's not some 'gotcha' indication that women aren't trying hard enough.

Plenty of things women bodies can do that male bodies can't, but no one tells them to try harder FFS.

Nothing to do with the skill level. Men have a physical advantage over females in every cell of their body in sport. You can't out train biology.

You realise teenage boys can beat pro women in those sports as well? The U15 boys British 100m record (10.78s) is faster than Dinas Ashers Smith record (10.83s) for example.

Strength and speed is not the same as skill.

SparkyBlue · 22/11/2022 14:55

It's a bit of fun. My DDs class watched the first bit of the England match yesterday as school finished around half time (btw everyone cheering for England). We are in Ireland so no need to show it but a lot of the children are interested and apparently great excitement today as Poland are playing later and lots of chat about it.

Women football is rubbish then. Which is what I said. Mens Sunday football is also rubbish.
What are you ranting about.

We have football on the TV at work all year
Should have heard the moaning when I asked for equestrian. Pointed out how many hours of football I had sat through and suddenly everyone shut up Grin

I didn't read RedAppleGirl's comment as saying women "aren't trying hard enough." I think all she's saying is that in many sports women's bodies are not as well suited as men's bodies are, therefore the standard is not as good. A top level female competitor, in most sports, is not as good as a top level male competitor. It's not just obviously physical sports like football or cricket either, even in things like snooker or darts the women's competition is much weaker. Even if they put the effort it.

It's not their fault, but it's wrong to ignore the fact that they're not as good. Take Fallon Sherrock for example, it was newsworthy when she beat a couple of male players at the World Championships a few years ago, but she's only able to qualify because there are specific competitions to ensure some women qualify.

Don't like football? Clearly not the thread for you.

I'm sure you can do your own research, as you clearly care enough to air your opinion. Here's a start.
