For not wanting everyone to think I am married to my Dad?

I know my Dad is young (he was 19 when they had me) and he looks well for his age but everywhere he goes people address him as my dh or dd's Dad.

At ballet last night my Dad picked dd up and the teacher started to ask him about an interview dh did last week. Various teachers at school have addressed him as E's Daddy or said to dd, your Daddy is here.

I guess that there are many people my age who are married to people 20 years older but its ambarrasing when it's my Dad!!!!

I should have the opposite problem to you. My dh is 20 years older than me but, since I have white hair too, we are more likely to be taken for dd's grandparents!

YANBU but I guess you just have to get used to it!

Well at least he's not like mine - strong contender for Alf Garnet/Victor Meldrew!

Could pay off if there are lots of gossips around. Play it as if you have 2 men in your life and see who bites.

How does he react when they do this?

jezzemx · 30/01/2008 23:03

I bet the teacher was mortified.
This happened to me when I addressed my dd's friend's Grandfather. He never corrected me and it wasn't until about 8 months later we were told he was her dad. He is about 25+ years older than the mother and looks like a lovely old grandad!!!
Just goes to show that I shouldn't assume.

There's a big age gap between DH and me as well MsHighwater. I know a couple of people have thought he's DS's grandfather I can well imagine though how much more embarassing it is the other way around.

I was accused of being my father's girlfriend once. Very embarrassing. He's only 23 years older than me.

When I was a teenager and used to take my baby half-sister to the park with him, we got some very funny looks, I can tell you!

jesuswhatnext · 31/01/2008 10:22

my dh is loads younger than me, dd 16 finds it funny that her friends think her dad is sooooo cool and 'fit looking' (he is too btw)he was 20 when she was born, most of her friends dads are on their second families and are in their late 50s

the only time i've been embrassed was in a hospital when dh had menigitis and the doc thought i was his stepmum

soopermum1 · 31/01/2008 12:24

I have been addressed on two separate occassions as the wife of a work colleague. huge embaressment all round.

The worst example I have of being taken for dd's grandmother is when she was about 7 months old. It was around Christmas and we were in a shop. Being Christmas, the shop had gingerbread biscuits on a plate for customers. As I was paying for our purchase, while holding dd, the shop assistant said to me, "would you like a biscuit for your grandson?"!!! I couldn't speak! (took a biccy though )

Or maybe the worst time was at the Baby Show while I was still pregnant with dd and the person at the stand asked us if the pram we were thinking of purchasing was for our grandchild!

FFS, I'm 40 so I know I am technically old enough to be someone's grandmother but I thought I had a few years left before I could expect it to be assumed!

my dad is married to a much younger woman, she is 2 years older than me, and now my dad is paranoid that everyone will think I am his wife, they also have a child together and when we go out he will try and introduce who we are, eg could you get some drinks for my wife and daughter, shame
