"Gifted"

DuchessDandelion · 21/11/2022 23:44

Anyone else annoyed by the sudden prevalence of "gifted" and "gifting"?

It's everywhere!!

Agree- it’s infuriating and I don’t use it. I always say given or donated.

DuchessDandelion · 21/11/2022 23:47

I'm noticing it on websites when I'm looking for present ideas...lots of them have a "gifting" section now and it annoys me more than any other use.

Agree. Particularly "gifted '. Really unnecessary.

PurpleButterflyWings · 21/11/2022 23:55

Doesn't bother me really. I do get irked by some sayings though.

'Reaching out.' Urgh! Confused

'Transparent' ... to mean what someone's saying is more clear. Whilst it may be grammatically correct it sounds stupid. It should only be used to describe glass/a window, not someone speaking honestly and clearly. I have a few more that I hate. Will post them later in the thread!

Crackof · 21/11/2022 23:56

Yes, it's grim!

Keyansier · 21/11/2022 23:59

I really couldn't get worked up about something like this if I'm being honest OP.

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/11/2022 00:02

Other annoying saying...

'It is what it is.'

'It's one of them isn't it?' (when describing a situation that occurs fairly often. (Like saying it's just one of those things!)

j712adrian · 22/11/2022 00:03

Vomitous.

"It is what it is" ??

I like to counter this with, "It isn't what it's not". 😐

Well THAT has confused me! 😂

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 22/11/2022 00:18

Yes . I don’t like kicked back or the awful my bad .

thehourwaslate · 22/11/2022 00:33

I agree. Another thing that annoys me is saying things like ‘change it up’ and ‘swap it out’. Why can’t it just be changed or swapped?

Yes! Why is the 'out' needed? Also see 'plenty', as in 'he's plenty old enough'.

Kitkatcatflap · 22/11/2022 02:37

I don't hear so much now but I have moved to another country (not because of it).

At the end of the day ........ I hated it so much, I would interrupt, 'you mean midnight' just to be goady

Funkyblues101 · 22/11/2022 03:05

It is so irritating.
People who use it have sucked up poncy media language and decided to run with it.

LBFseBrom · 22/11/2022 03:59

I don't like 'gifted' and don't use it, but have been informed that it is not grammatically incorrect. I'll be quite happy to find out it is! I googled and cannot find any definition other than 'being exceptionally intelligent or talented'.

WindyKnickers · 22/11/2022 04:34

I first started noticing it on MN a few years ago in the form of "re-gifting" ie palming off unwanted presents on other people. Have always hated it.

Re the PP I quite like "transparent" in reference to people or conversations. It indicates a desire to be honest and up front with people. I use it from time to time at work.

Likewise. I interrupt with 'It'll be night ....'

The use of 'super' in front of emotional states irritates me - super excited, super worried, super angry etc. etc.

It's as though people who use it are attempting to outrank those who are (merely) very excited, extremely worried or really angry..

Appleblum · 22/11/2022 05:06

It's so irritating. Another one that keeps coming up in my parents group is when they have some old books or clothing to give away and they post a photo and tag it with 'to bless'. No you are giving away something you no longer need, and I don't need a blessing!

FallowfieldHillbilly · 22/11/2022 07:18

My 14 year old ds has just started saying 'On accident' instead of 'By accident'.

My kids have too. My ds when diagnosed with autism was observed by a child psychologist who wrote that he speaks in an affected American accent and vernacular 😆

Ugh! That's so patronising!

As if people receiving their donations are going to feel blessed and lucky for being in that situation!
