To think Christmas is getting earlier and earlier?

A lot of people I know have already decorated their houses and put their trees up. Even though it's not even December yet. Aibu to think Christmas is getting earlier by the year ?

No as far as I know Christmas Day is still December 25th

if people choose to put their tree up before then that's their prerogative

OnlyFannys · 21/11/2022 22:25

Tbh it's been like this for the last few years, partly over covid

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/11/2022 22:25

A lot? It must depend who you know I suppose.

In my class of 30 children only one has their tree up, and driving through my town I've seen 2 houses with trees or lights visible. So not that many around here at the moment.

ILikeSofas · 21/11/2022 22:25

Christmas stuff was in the shops a week before Halloween stuff. In September.

Plain wrong.

avocadoandchill · 21/11/2022 22:25

Nah

noworklifebalance · 21/11/2022 22:28

YANBU based on me alone! For the first time I have thought fuck it, going to put the tree up when I have always waited until Dec 1st.
Not sure why I am feeling this way when I was fine waiting for December during the two years of Covid

namechangeagain3 · 21/11/2022 22:28

Think it's personal choice. For me Christmas is more than a day it's more of a feeling and experience and build up to the day itself. I start to feel excited and happy from November. I grew up hating it and crying the day away as a kid. But since having my children and my husband I absolutely love it.
I guess you could say it's more winter I enjoy rather than Christmas Day but I don't think it is just that.
I am just sorting through all my Christmas stuff now to go up and I'm in my element. My husband doesn't get my excitement but happily goes along with it 😂.

Same here. The tree lights just make the early dark nights seem a bit less depressing!

I relate to this - it’s the build up, not just the day itself

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/11/2022 22:30

We celebrate Thanksgiving which keeps Christmas in its lane at DH’s insistence; but I can’t judge anyone who puts the Christmas tree up in November. It’s cold, it’s dark, why not bring a symbol of winter indoors and light it up for cheer?

SheldonsShoulder · 21/11/2022 22:30

I went into B&M over a week before Halloween to buy Halloween decorations and they told me it was all gone to make room for the Christmas decorations. It’s mainly the retailers pushing it earlier every year. But each to their own.

Daftasahoover · 21/11/2022 22:31

We've seen loads of houses with decorations up already (first one well over a week ago). Each to each, but when is too early? June? Easter? Think it removes the anticipation and impact when all the decorations are up six weeks before somehow.

melj1213 · 21/11/2022 22:32

I work in retail and Christmas has always started sneaking in from the end of September onwards, a few little bits here and there while the Halloween stuff is in but November 1st it's like Santa's grotto.

Doesn't stop people coming in every year on December 1st aghast that we have sold out of advent calendars when they need one for their child or December 23rd aghast that we have sold out of Christmas cards/wrapping paper/turkeys/other seasonal essential ... All of which have been on sale since mid-October and we have only sold out of completely in the previous few days.

UWhatNow · 21/11/2022 22:32

Yes quite a few more with decorations up round us than we’d normally see. I can only assume people are so fucked off with everything, they need a bit of fairy light and something to look forward to.

I’m a Puritan and think that as grown adults you should be able to delay gratification and wait until at least December (advent) but I don’t suppose it hurts anyone. It’s just looks a bit incongruous and a bit bonkers in mid November!

DuplicateUserName · 21/11/2022 22:32

I think it's lovely to see the bright lights when I'm walking my dogs in the dark and miserable rain.

stargirl1701 · 21/11/2022 22:36

Not in our house.

Advent begins on Sunday, St Andrew's Day next week.

Christmas will begin on Christmas Eve here as it always has done. We will enjoy 12 days of it!

FourChimneys · 21/11/2022 22:42

I think supermarkets etc should have a separate section for Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en and other events. That way they could have it out all year which would please some people, and other people including me could avoid it.

I'm happy to see lights on an evening walk though. "Fairy lights are for life, not just for Christmas."

Glad some traditionalists are still around!

Yep. Now that almost no-one is Christian, Christmas must supply in duration what it lacks in meaning.
Also cost, apparently. You have to start in mid November and spend a grand. Bonus points for not having the grand and borrowing it at an interest rate you can't afford.

Crackof · 21/11/2022 23:46

Extra bonus points for buying plastic that made by someone else's children in a foreign country, and for having it break on Xmas Day.

Oh dear I’m a fully paid up Christian and still spend a grand on a credit card I can’t afford! Admittedly some of that is buying church raffle tickets and donating gifts to the local families…

You are both bu and nbu. All at the same time.
Do you start in mid November?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 22/11/2022 08:03

Not this again!
Every single year without fail

Which kind of suggests the answer really I think.

No. Every year the retail industry starts in October. Every year a few mavericks decorate really early and get the neighbours frothing and every year someone asks if Christmas isn't getting earlier and earlier.

Every single year

No it's not!
