Tipping etiquette

I’ll keep it neutral so that it’s unbiased, currently having a discussion with DP

A) One of us thinks tipping is absolutely customary, regardless of the actual service (unless downright offensively bad)

B) One of us thinks tipping shouldn’t be expected, and service charges should be removed to add your own amount should you wish.

Also discussion on percentages. One of us thinks 10-12% is adequate. One of us thinks 15-20%

Both agree tipping etiquette is a nuisance and wish there were clearer social rules. We are in the UK.

Who would you side with? A or B

If you are referring to restaurants, A and around 15%.
Hairdresser 12%.

I only tip with cash to ensure the server and colleagues actually get the tip and always at 15% .

I really hate it when folks try to argue that if they don’t tip then staff will get more. It’s ludicrous and fails to take account of economics, which is restaurants, taxi drivers, hairdressers, bars etc would just put the base price up to pay that increased wage. You as a punter pay the same either way. With tipping it’s to incentivise and reward good service.

B. I don't agree with tipping. There is a minimum wage, why should waiters get more than other minimum wage staff such as carers?

I’m in Australia but essentially same as UK in this regard (I.e not aligned with the US system whereby it’s meant to be covered by wages).

If I go to a ‘family restaurant’ (don’t these days as kids are grown), then 10% for standard service. 15% for good service.

We generally eat at decent places now the kids are grown. The level of service is expected to be so much better so 20% for standard service, 30% for good service and up to 50% for outstanding service, but that obviously covers wait staff, kitchen staff, mixology/bar staff.

One of our friends always gives a generous cash tip up front advising that there will be a very generous tip at the end if we receive good service, and that works as well 😁.

Plenty of people work minimum wage in ‘non tip culture’ jobs.

And it’s built into the price - it’s why restaurants charge more than takeaways. The cost of the service is built into the cost of the meal.

I’d say tipping in a restaurant is required if the service is any more than adequate (I’d never tip for terrible). Adequate I’d tip 10%, have been known if I like the staff to tip 25-30% because why not and it can really make someone’s day
