I have fallen in love with a large oil portrait of a beautiful late Georgian woman - I only live in a 3 bed semi and having lots of renovation work done soon. With architect fees we are tight (renovation money coming when remortgage goes through early next year) but it’s always been my ambition to own a proper portrait of a Georgian lady (I have a deep interest in social history and costume of that specific period) she is honestly the most beautiful thing I have seen in my life. I never thought it was something I could achieve. It’s a big birthday for me early next year - should I get her? She’s on reserve right now, DH has said yes but I’ve never spent this much money on myself before. Am I crazy even to consider it?

It’s my own money (which could go elsewhere like structural engineers) she’s £1350. Would you like to see her? Am I silly having her in such a modest house?

Do it. Our art purchases of similar price make me happy every day. They don't wear out, you will have her forever.

mumda · 21/11/2022 19:15

It's only money. If you're not borrowing to buy it go for it.

Dogscanteatonions you sound like me!

I do hope you buy her

Auntpodder · 21/11/2022 20:13

Oh definitely buy..

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 21/11/2022 20:17

Is it a real oil painting?

A friend of mine bought a painting that was actually a poster (print) that had been treated with gloss paint on the top, so it looked like brush strokes. It no longer made her happy once she knew... actually maybe better to not check

Make sure you buy it from a trusted dealer though

It's very cheap for a real painting

SeenAndNot · 21/11/2022 20:19

In my experience I’d you don’t buy a work of art that’s captured you when you can you’ll regret it.

clockapp · 21/11/2022 20:22

I felt like this over a painting / one of 12 run from an amazing artist. It a photo of a turbulent sea with glitter resin applied to the white horses waves it took my breath away. I didn't buy it and regretted it for years. Saw one in a shop in York randomly and bought it there and then!

It's now sat above my fire in our living room sparkling away as though the sea is moving. And I love it so so much.

OnlyFannys · 21/11/2022 20:22

You would regret it for years if you dont. I like that she is playing with her booby.

UthredofBattenberg · 21/11/2022 20:28

Buy her. The painting clearly speaks to you in a way that only art can.

I seriously doubt you will regret buying it, but quite likely you will regret NOT buying it.

(Voice of regret not buying a picture I saw in an art gallery about 5 years ago)

thegreenlight · 21/11/2022 20:35

HowDoYouOwnDisorder this is the back - I hope it looks authentic. It has been relined at some point in it’s history.

Nothing other that she was from a country house estate sale in Kent. She’s gorgeous, isn’t she?

Are you able to research and find out more about it/her?

Brigante9 · 21/11/2022 20:40

Get her or you’ll regret it forever. We have bought insane bits of furniture despite living in a 3 bed semi. 8foot mirror fitted into a doorway from a fortified house, gas pump full of dvds, half an old boat turned into shelves.

Just put away the crates, may live to regret the pups being loose!

I like your piece of art, and the mirror and fireplace @Brigante9 Very cosy

Runnerduck34 · 21/11/2022 20:44

Buy the painting ( as long as you can still pay all your bills and eat!) you will regret it otherwise.
It's fine to want something for you and it will give you so much pleasure.

Allyouneedislunch · 21/11/2022 20:56

In the words of John Keats:
‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever’
I’ve applied this to many things in my life 🙂

Blossomtoes · 21/11/2022 21:01

Buy it. You’ll regret not buying it, you’ll never regret it if you look at it every day.

Alexandernevermind · 21/11/2022 21:05

Buy her.
Do you follow the Maximalist Design and Decor FB page? You could get ideas on styling a whole room around her.

OrlandointheWilderness · 21/11/2022 21:06

Tbh art you love is very rarely a bad investment as it brings such pleasure!

Time40 · 21/11/2022 21:07

Definitely buy it - if you are absolutely sure that it's a genuine painting from the period. As a pp said, it seems suspiciously cheap for what it apparently is.

There was a painting and and also a drawing that I didn't get, and I still desperately regret both of them, many, many years later.

user143677433 · 21/11/2022 21:10

Do it!

I still regret a painting that I didn’t buy in 2019. I have a picture of it in my phone and look at it often.

Fiddledeedeeee · 21/11/2022 21:12

Buy it! You’ll regret it if not.
I passed up the chance to buy an original painting with a gorgeous story when in New Zealand on holiday, as I thought I couldn’t justify the cost. I’ve regretted it ever since! Even got in touch with the studio and artist when I was back home and regretting it, but it was gone.

RowanAtkinsonsRubberyFace · 21/11/2022 21:15

Is she cupping her own breast? Or is there something in her hand? My DM likes paintings in this style, she has them in her 50s chalet bungalow and they look surprisingly at home. If you love her, buy her.

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/11/2022 21:15

Buy it.

I went to pick up a framed limited edition print and saw one I liked more but didn't dare buy two. I think about it all the time.

Bideshi · 21/11/2022 21:17

It's the things you don't buy you regret. Still pining for that 1770 Irish four poster that I nearly bought in 1982.
She'd not late Georgian though is she? Early to mid.

TattiePants · 21/11/2022 21:19

Do it. I fell in love with a French chandelier in an antiques shop about 10 years ago that cost a similar amount and would drool over it every time I passed. Then one day it was gone and I was absolutely gutted. Fortunately they'd just moved it but I knew it was fate and I got it for my 40th birthday. It's still hanging in my hall and brings me joy every day.

I can still think about the antique 'cushion' mirror that I didn't buy over 20 years ago.
