To be hopeful there was just one mouse?

Saw a mouse in the kitchen last night. Put traps down this afternoon in all rooms. Went out for a couple of hours, came home to one caught in the bathroom trap (bathroom is above the kitchen so I'm assuming it made its way up the walls, if it's the same one). No droppings anywhere, no smell of wee, nothing chewed that I can see. I've read you never only have one mouse, but has anyone experienced just the one? How much extra cleaning should I be doing incase there is wee on things that I can't smell? I'm making sure I clean down surfaces in the kitchen more that I usually would. Is regular kitchen cleaner ok or does it need to be bleach?

I know everyone says you never just have one but we genuinely just had one mouse. We had scratching noises and droppings etc. Kept seeing it in the same place downstairs, caught it in a humane trap and released it a few miles away and no sign of any mice since. So it is possible!

Was it grey or brown? If brown it could’ve been an opportunist field mouse. Grey more likely a house mouse.
sorry but if you’ve seen one in plain sight it’s very likely there are more

We only ever had two.

But we also had a load of bags and boxes under the stairs that they probably got into as well. So we just destroyed all of that without daring to look inside.

As well as the traps and poison, we used one of those plug in high pitched deterent things. No trace of another one after that.

Thanks for replies I've been in tears today with worry. I can't relax at all I'm so on edge. Caught the mouse Monday afternoon, I've left the traps in every room since then. It's now Wednesday evening and haven't caught anymore, there's been no droppings or anything chewed but I'm under no illusion it's all been dealt with!

I'm also worried it may have been a rat. My mum said it was a big mouse when she saw it. I barely looked at it in the trap and my dad came round d and disposed of it because I chickened out. At a glance it looked quite big but then I don't know how big mice can get. It was a mouse trap, would that be strong enough to catch a rat?

I have only had 1 mouse think it came in when back door left open courtesy of DD.

I have the back door open a lot - I'm a warm person and have it open when I'm cooking, cleaning, etc. it hadn't been open Sunday though

Mice are social creatures and live in family groups. You’d have only one mouse if it’s one a cat brought in. Otherwise, there are probably more. Just clean and set out more traps.

Thanks I am but I just can't shake the feeling that one is going to run out when I'm playing on the floor with DD or over is when we're asleep. I doused the bed in lavender spray last night as apparently they don't like lavender, no idea how true it is!

I’ve only ever had two at a time, usually at the point the weather turns properly cold. I put down humane traps (chocolate or peanut butter inside) and this winter I’m trying these mouse spray sachets with fingers crossed!

We had mice in our student house when I was at uni.

I only (and hopefully) every saw 1.

Our LL put a few traps down, some poison in all the corners of each room and checked all the skirting boards for holes. Any holes, even some as small as a 20 pence piece we’re filled with metal scourers. (You’d be surprised how small the holes are they can squeeze through)

Id call your local pest control/exterminators as well. And even your neighbours if your attached to any.

I bought some wire wool today but didn't get chance to actually fill any holes yet. I wasn't sure if I needed to call the professionals until/if I see evidence of more than one. I'm mid terrace but it's empty one side

We used tin foil to fill up gaps when we had a couple of mice. Apparently they won't gnaw through it.
Ours made themselves very comfortable in our loo rolls. Thankfully got rid before any babies appeared.

Rats are big - I don't think you could mistake one for the other. They were as they walk so you will have wee wherever it went - you won't necessarily be able to smell it.
I'd get the exterminator in. They'll Indira t your lift and under your kitchen kick boards etc - I had one £85 for three visits (2nd and third to check the poison).

Could you end up with dead mice behind walls, etc? Just worried they could die somewhere out of reach
