Safeguarding concerns *trigger warning*

Posted in AIBU for traffic - and also because I couldn’t see where else I could put it.

It’s a horribly long and complicated story - but to try to keep it short….

I know there is a child sexual abuser visiting a foreign country. I know that in that country he will be having access to young children who are vulnerable for several reasons. There appears to be absolutely nothing I can do about it. All safeguarding advice is to contact MY local police. That would be my local police who can’t even be bothered to address serious crimes in our own force area - never mind half a world away. Of course, yes I have done it - and provided the limited information that I have …. but that seems so ridiculously useless and just not enough.
I’m not sure whether I’m hoping someone will have a magic solution, or a miracle. But I guess AIBU for being so ineffective. Am I missing something obvious?

Contact and inform the police in his destination country? Ideally in his destination city/town/village, if you know it.

It’s a country in which local police would not do anything - nothing that £100 wouldn’t make go away anyway.

What country?

justiceandtruth · 21/11/2022 01:29

Am a bit wary about the exact details - but think Thailand

it's hard if police in that country won't do a thing. I have been to a few countries where there are UN programs on safeguarding but not sure how effective they are. In another country (similar to Thailand) there was the Don't look away program although it was obvious many western tourists were blatantly abusing kids so again effectiveness us doubtful but a few may get saved. Have a look at
dontlookaway.report/ They provide links I believe

justiceandtruth · 21/11/2022 01:53

Thank you. Have looked through that link - and it says the same. To report to the police in this country 😔

Is this abuser already on the sex offenders register? If they are, they’ll have an allocated officer who’s responsible for monitoring their behaviour and should be checking they they are not seeking opportunities to reoffend. Information like this would definitely be something they’d want to know about.

GingerScallop · 21/11/2022 07:31

@justiceandtruth It also has a link below to hotlines and inhope portals. As I said before its hard because ultimately it goes to local police in many cases. Of course you could try the general queries LINE of the NCA 0370 496 7622

Countries with high numbers of foreign child sexual abusers, for example Thailand and Cambodia, will have dedicated NGOs (Non-government organisations). I suggest you search for those online and let them have as much info as possible. Those organisations are pretty hard-core and do the job the police should be doing.

Can you please name the country? That way we can offer some targeted advice because different NGOs and programmes focus on different countries. It will not be outing and it is not disrespectful. Every country on earth suffers from and is not doing nearly enough on stopping CSA for various reasons, obviously to different extents so its not as if you are demeaning that country. Lucy Faithfull, BICE, RAHI, UN Women (in some countries, not all), First Step (Cambodia), Hope World Wide (Philippines, a bit in west Africa). Problem is many of these focus on different aspects in different countries. May be google the country and NGOs working on this issue. It is a very very difficult issue especially as you will be reporting someone that might do something not evidence that he is doing something. However, in some places they may have mechanisms to be alert

Venetiaparties · 21/11/2022 12:01

I would contact your local police station anyway, at least then you have done your best.

justiceandtruth · 21/11/2022 20:27

Sorry everyone. Have been burying my head in the sand today. It’s the Philippines. He’s not a registered offender (mores the pity). I have contacted a couple of foundations - but it all still feels so “useless”. To make it clear I have reported it to my local police who say they send it off as “intel” - but my local police also couldn’t find a pen in a stationery shop so am not inspired with confidence.
