That we should talk about salaries more?

Inspired by another thread about age, salary and sector. it got me thinking, should there be more transparency in what a job is worth?

I am not suggesting we know that Angela down the road earns 15k doing XYZ, but outside of public sector roles it’s difficult to understand what a job is worth - they say competitive etc.

I have seen a growing movement of some private companies adding salaries between x and Y, which is helpful, but shouldn’t it be compulsory that there is this level of transparency?

also personally I’m properly nosey and would love to know what Angela down the road earned! So I don’t mind those threads at all 😂

I think that more transparency in general is a positive thing - as Brits we're generally very cagey about money but I think the more chat about salaries, mortgages, finances etc the better, money is a bit of a taboo subject for some.

DesignerRecliner · 20/11/2022 20:34

I'm very open about what I earn and believe everyone should be - but it's very frowned upon to discuss this in certain circles. It drives me mad as it makes it easier for employers to screw over women!

Talk about it more?

there’s usually five or six threads a WEEK on here.

tickticksnooze · 20/11/2022 20:41

In Scandinavia anyone can look at anyone else's tax return to know exactly what their income is.

Secrecy about salaries only serves employers.

Websites like glassdoor are really useful for career planning and job applications.

DillDanding · 20/11/2022 20:46

I agree. I have no qualms about revealing what I earn. It’s viewed so negatively on here to discuss earnings.

Came on to say the same!

Obsessed!!!

Usually within a company you will have several employees doing the same job on different wages (offer women earning less), and employment contracts that state that employees must not disclose their salaries to each other. I think in that case more openness would be a good thing. I’ve had cases where I’ve been on more than my line manager as they’ve been there for years and had incremental raises but I’ve been hired on the “going rate” which has risen much faster.

Shouldwetalkmore · 20/11/2022 20:56

@SavoirFlair and @Daydreamer12345, yes more in the real world, not the MN bubble where’s there’s very little context.

I’ve had open conversations with some colleagues and friends, but then it’s always been approached in a “I’m happy to share but you don’t have to.”

@tickticksnooze I never knew that.

I read about a company that every time they hire a new person they pay the corresponding employee the same salary, so they’re always getting market rate.

I do think it’s wrong that you have to leave a job, in most cases, to progress with your salary. Of companies really looked at the cost to rehire, it’s cheaper to retain the talent (if you want to keep them!).

This. ^

@Shouldwetalkmore You do realise do you not, that the vast majority of people on here will not be truthful about their salary? Most people in real LIFE keep it close to their chest/embellish/exaggerate it. Why on EARTH do you think anyone on here will tell the truth?

Also, was there REALLY any need to start another thread about this tedious shit? Hmm

In answer to your thread question. NO. We do NOT need to talk about salaries more.

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/11/2022 21:02

I get paid by the hour, not salary.

You know there's a button to hide threads you're not interested in?

Ponesta · 20/11/2022 21:05

My old dad said never tell anyone how much you earn or how you vote. It's fine me well so far.

ClaryFairchild · 20/11/2022 21:13

I agree and disagree. Working at a large organisation and some of my colleagues and I have decided to be transparent with each other as we work our way up, Thai way we know what salaries to ask for, what positions to go for etc.

However, I'm in Australia and child support is calculated differently here. Both our incomes are shown on the form for the calculations. It means that my ex who never sees our DC sees my income. I HATE it!!!

Ooooh, no! I didn't know that. Shock Please do tell me what I have to press to 'hide the thread'... I simply have NO IDEA. You are clearly more intelligent than me. PLEASE enlighten me oh wise and superior all-knowing-oracle.

#sarcasm Wink

Shouldwetalkmore · 20/11/2022 21:30

@PurpleButterflyWings thw nature of this thread is about real life, not MN. I’ve not asked anyone to share their salary, just their views.

Thank you for sharing yours.
