AIBU to get my child an Amazon fire instead of a fire kids version?

It appears that the non-kids version is less than half the price of the kids version.

Am I being unreasonable in getting the cheaper one? Will they be missing something or is it marketing?

We did exactly this. You can still download the kids app onto a regular fire. The kids version just comes with it already installed and with content filters.

The younger kids tablet is sturdier. But there’s no difference between the adult and older kids versions

PuttingDownRoots · 20/11/2022 20:54

Its the same tablet, just comes with a cover and Kids Unlimited

The kids one used to come with some sort of warranty that would cover repair or replacement even for accidental damage. My friend used it for her son when he accidentally stood on his and broke the screen. I think it's 2 years. If they still offer that then it can be worth it. My daughter used to use mine and wrecked the charging port. TWICE. So that had to be repaired and then she did it a third time and I really regretted not getting her a kids version.

cortisolqueen · 20/11/2022 20:58

We did this. Bought sturdy cases. Much better value.

HobnobsChoice · 20/11/2022 20:58

It might still have that warranty on it, I haven't looked as my kids are now just about old enough to be trusted not to wreck things.

They still do. It’s worth it for the warranty and the included years worth of kids subscription.

SpinningFloppa · 20/11/2022 21:02

There is no difference they are the same. One just has a case and comes with kids profiles and 2 year warranty but the normal one has a 1 year warranty

saggybottoms · 20/11/2022 21:41

thank you so much everyone! very glad I am not unreasonable and can save £40!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 20/11/2022 21:45

You get a 2 year guarantee on the kids version. Even if the kid smashes it they will replace no questions asked. Even multiple times if necessary (my ds has autism and broke his in a meltdown several times). Plus a years free kids unlimited, with access to loads of games and books. It's worth the extra money imo

demotedreally · 20/11/2022 21:46

Are they any good? We have a couple of older ones and they are full of stuff and we can't really enjoy them. We are vaguely toying with upgrading them

Iwantamarshmallowman · 20/11/2022 21:57

My daughter had the kids version. we really couldn't get on with it. it's locked to Amazon and you can't acess the Internet or you tube. we ended up buying her a normal one. I would however advise you to consider paying the extra £10 to buy the non-add version. I didn't do this and really regret it as the adds are a pain in the arse especially with you children involved.

SpinningFloppa · 20/11/2022 23:03

I really didn’t find it worth the extra, my kids didn’t like any of the kids stuff it came with as they prefer roblox/minecraft, guess it’s ok for a toddler (the games / apps are more aimed at toddlers)

CrochetIsCool · 21/11/2022 11:32

Depends on the age of the child. Kids one has a sturdy case and the 2 year guarantee is great. My grandchild's was broken less than 10 days before the 2 years was up and. No quibble about it being replaced and great customer service - they were in hospital at the time and a brand new one was delivered next day rather than us having to return the damaged one first. We were just given a timescale for the return otherwise we would be charged the cost of the new one which was fair enough.

Freeasabird76 · 21/11/2022 11:35

My daughter has the kids one luckily as replaced twice in the two years.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 21/11/2022 11:35

Seconding the view that it’s pants - we ended up buying a cheap Lenovo tablet so DS could access YouTube/Minecraft/School stuff

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 21/11/2022 11:42

We chose the kids version because of: 2 year warranty for any sort of breakage (eg if the kid smashes it by accident); 1 year free kids subscription (normally £3.99/m I think); sturdy case.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/11/2022 11:50

Have just done the same thing - also if you already have a kids account you can just use it on any new fore that you buy

Do you mean the kids one @Allmyarseandpeggymartin ? or just amazon in general?

Sarah180818 · 21/11/2022 17:50

Both my DSs have a normal kindle fire 8 bought we bought sturdier case.

Thatboymum · 21/11/2022 17:59

I wouldn’t recommend the kids one to be honest, we have iPads but bought the kids fire for a plane journey and my kids hated it it was soo slow crashed all the time glitches and generally not a nice device to use so it just sits in a drawer, Amazon did look at it and said it’s not broken that’s just how it is so from me I wouldn’t recommend it

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 22/11/2022 09:56

@saggybottoms The kids one. Might be okay for really little kids but as soon as they want to play minecraft or use kids you tube you won’t be able to
