Finding clubs that aren't too babyish (gymnastics)

AIBU to think that a lot of clubs for kids are too babyish? I've taken my 4yo son to a couple of gymnastics classes and they just consist of them doing things like running and quacking like a duck/barking like a dog etc until they're told to stop. Doing star jumps. Singing songs etc. AIBU to want a gymnastics club that will teach my child actual gymnastics or am I expecting too much? At home we have Olympic rings which he teaches himself on from watching Olympic videos over and over again (he's quite fixated on this atm) and he cries after his gymnastics classes telling me he wants to learn 'proper gymnastics'. Is he too young? I couldn't care less what he's doing as long as he's happy but he's just desperate to learn some actual gymnastics, rather than the kind of stuff he does at nursery.... If I am not BU, where do I start?!

Ask on a local FB group for your area? Any friends who go to clubs?

Must admit, I’ve never heard of gymnastics clubs having them bark and quack!

Are you taking him to daytime preschool classes? Try looking for a British Gymnastics club near you, he should be able to join a recreation class at 4

They two I've been to (which have really good reviews!) have classes which are for aged walking-5 and a lot of the 5yo love it, but my 4yo is just bored and when he thinks of gymnastics, he thinks of the stuff he's watching on TV. Obviously he is a long way off being a half decent gymnast but I've just felt a bit underwhelmed by it.

I'm probably joining him to the wrong classes. I had to pay a British gymnastics membership so I'm guessing they are.

Are you sure these are gymnastic classes, rather than movement / music type things, like Jo Jingles?

We have a local gymnastic club and the young children use apparatus, practice rolls and balancing. It's nothing like you describe.

If you look at the British Gymnastics website - they have a class finder. At 4 you may have a mixed class but ideally in the longer run you want a club that has boys recreational classes and/or a squad so they have the boys equipment.

My DC is 4 and at their beginners gymnastic class they definitely do ‘proper’ gymnastics and use the equipment like rings and beam etc. as others have said it’s a British gymnastics backed one

BendingSpoons · 20/11/2022 13:32

The classes around here do 'proper' gymnastics from 3/4 years. I would ask around.

I had to stop my 2 year old doing gymnastics because they were expecting her to use the rings etc that you're mentioning it but she's too small to reach. They were run out of a leisure centre in the proper gymnasium with all the equipment.

Are you going to an affiliated gymnastics club? I took mine to one and they had trampolines and little circuits. Can’t remember her being taught much more than a fwd / bkwd roll. I think it was called tumble time.

Classes start from school age. Only intermediate and then competition classes learn ‘proper’ gymnastics. These classes are quite competitive and include a lot of conditioning work. My DD does bars, beam, vault and floor

Sorry should say repetitive
