WTH wrong with my eye?

CoffeeLover90 · 20/11/2022 12:13

Shamelessly posting on here for traffic.
I've woken up this morning and the outer corner of my eye is so sore and swollen, the pain is in my eyebrow, the outer edge of my eye and underneath my eye is a little tender. I've had styes before and they were red, this isn't.
I have googled, it did suggest a stye but I would have thought it would be red and the pain wouldn't cover such a large area or that the eyebrow would swell too.
No chemists open today.
With a platform like this, hoping someone would put my mind at rest, if this is usual for a stye and it'd just not effected me like this before.

@CoffeeLover90

Could you upload a photo of it? It sounds (to me) a tiny bit like conjunctivitis, but I'm not a doctor or nurse, and I haven't seen it. Hope you're not suffering too much. Flowers

LillyBugg · 20/11/2022 13:27

Could it be blepharitis? I get this if I get slack at removing make up. Doctor told me to keep the eye make up free for a week and keep cleaning and the swelling went down. Teach me to be so bloody lazy in the evenings Blush

704703hey · 20/11/2022 14:01

Yes this is me! Is yours watering?

CoffeeLover90 · 20/11/2022 14:30

Photos not very helpful 🙄 sorry. Basically the swelling is mostly below my eyebrow at the outer edge and the far corner of my eye. No redness but eye appears half closed with the swelling.
I had blepharitis last year in the other eye. That swelling was across the entire lid and was very red, it didn't hurt though.
Eye is watering a little but only after I bathed it with warm water and massaged with warm cloth, as advised by Dr Google (following stye advice until I knew)

Different photo. I've circled where the pain and swelling is as it's hard to see.

I am not medically trained. This is recent personal experience.

I had the exactly same thing. Doctor confirmed blepharitis. I had never had before. This looks 100% the same but do get checked by GP to be sure.

If it is

  1. Stop touching eyes
  2. Wash hands
  3. Put a tiny bit of Johnsons baby no tears shampoo into container of warm water
  4. Use soft cotton wool balls - dip into warm water
  5. Hold cotton against eyelids
  6. Use new cotton balls, dip and gently wash one way on eyelids ten times
  7. Don't wear any eye makeup
  8. Repeat the steps until better.
  9. Never touch eyes to itch

As I say, looks exactly the same but do get checked first.

wellhelloyou · 20/11/2022 15:16

I meant to say repeat steps every day until better. I gently washed eyes twce a day.

DuchessDandelion · 20/11/2022 15:19

Assuming you're in the UK, op, but have you checked boots? They have some branches open on Sundays and would be worth checking (unless you live hours from anywhere)

Thank you I had this too for the first time last year. Was awful. This feels more painful but not as swollen etc. Will visit chemist tomorrow as pharmacist was able to confirm it last time and I bought an ointment that helped.

Yes uk, boots aren't local but I did ring and their chemist isn't open. I'd rather speak to them first as can't remember the name of the ointment I got last time.

Also, sorry for TMI, since posting this there's been green discharge. This happened last time with blepharitis so im now sure it is and for some reason is just painful this time.

Bit late for today I imagine unless there is a supermarket optician open later near you, our one that is signed up to the service is open until 5pm on Sunday.

It IS sounding like blepharitis now @CoffeeLover90 especially with looking at the pics too. As a pp said, pop into a pharmacist tomorrow and contact your GP. Sit by the phone at 8.30am tomorrow and see if you can be one of the first to get through.

Not sure how things work with your Medical Practice, but ours gives a doctor call back - or nurse - within 5 hours, and they will see you if they think they need to - and it sounds like they do need to see you. Good luck! But yeah, ask the pharmacist too, they often have good medical knowledge!

monicagellerbing · 20/11/2022 15:48

Tesco Asda and sainsburys all have pharmacies inside them where you could see someone today OP.

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/11/2022 15:49

She'll have to be quick. Most places shut in 10 minutes!

My local one is fantastic. When I last had it i visited them first, they sold the ointment, explained how to clean it etc and told me to go to GP if it didn't clear in a few days. It didn't, I went to the gp and got the same advice. Nothing else. Was just told to go back if vision blurred or I developed a fever.
I've had issues since. I developed a cyst on the eye after the blepharitis cleared. That got infected and I had to use private health care to get removed. Around 2 months ago I developed a very small bump on the eye which looks to be another cyst. I was told I'd likely get another. That hasn't grew or become infected. I've not worn make up in the last year or used any eye cream. I clean twice a day and use a spray for dry eyes daily. It's annoying.

IME the best person to look at eyes is your high street optician. Mine sent me straight to Moorfields A&E with a letter. (I thought I had conjunctivitis, but it was uveitis). When DH had an injury to his eye when gardening, he went to the same local optician and they did a thorough examination, gave him some drops and charged him around £10. They are the experts and they have all the right equipment. Keep bathing it as advised today, but maybe ring your local optician in the morning.

Awww what a pain!!! Sad

As @endofthelinefinally suggested, popping into an optician may be a good idea too! I never thought of that actually!

stayathomegardener · 20/11/2022 16:30

Opticians keep daily appointments available for non routine checks in an agreement with the NHS.

Brilliant service x

CoffeeLover90 · 20/11/2022 17:03

I will give the opticians a call tomorrow to see what they say. I do have an eye infirmary nearby too but the wait list is months long for non emergency. Which is why I ended up going private to have the cyst removed.
