From free to £50?!

I saw something advertised on our local selling group - a bundle of Peppa Pig toys - advertised as FREE.

I messaged the seller and asked if they were still available - in my head I was thinking I will give them £20 when I pick them up as a good will gesture. She replied saying they were still available so I asked for address and said i would go and collect them now. She sent me her address and then said “unfortunately there was a mistake on the add, they’re not free”. So I said “ok, how much are they?” And she replied “£50”.

I couldn’t afford this so I replied and said “ok, but out of my price range unfortunately so I’ll leave it, thanks anyway” so she replied “funny how you were desperate for them when they were free though”.

She advertised them as free!! Of course people are going to be interested!! She doesn’t know I was going to give her £20 when I got there but surely if you realise there is a mistake on the add you change it? You don’t just assume people will hand over £50 once you tell them that’s what you really want?

What a nasty sad cow!

Thisismyusername1 · 20/11/2022 09:20

I've had this when selling items. It was just kids clothes, I think because the group is private when I ticked add to marketplace it couldn't copy across the information so listed the price as £0. However, I found out quickly as I had loads of messages. Had to let them all know there was an error with the price and deleted the marketplace ad.

The seller on this occasion sounds quite spiteful it would have been easier to explain the error when they noticed it.

Anonanon1234 · 20/11/2022 09:26

I'd respond "Oh that's a shame, as I was actually hoping to spend £80. Why so cheap?" then block and run away laughing.

KatherineJaneway · 20/11/2022 09:50

I'd respond "Mistake my arse, greedy cow" and block 😁

Cakeandcardio · 20/11/2022 10:07

I once gave a barely used oven away for free. I'd found myself in hard times and people were kind to me so when things got better, I helped others where I could. I expected people to want it because it was free. She was being a tit. Let her keep her Peppa shite and her nasty personality.

takealettermsjones · 20/11/2022 10:45

The cheek of her! She seems to be upset that people often choose whether something is worth buying based on the price? Is it her first day on earth? 😂

jonnyjannoo · 20/11/2022 10:45

@AutumnFox what a horrible woman! I agree you should report her to the selling site. If it was me, id also be replying to her to let her know what I thought of her. But I understand not everyone would want to do that!

mondaytosunday · 20/11/2022 10:48

The obvious answer was : 'yes of course I was keen when they I thought they were free'! You aren't a cheapskate - she's a fool.

LadyApplejack · 20/11/2022 10:56

Er she's the tight arse, wanting £50 for second hand plastic crap! Don't most people give that stuff away?!

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 20/11/2022 11:01

@AutumnFox

There was no need for her to be unpleasant.
I've had pepper pig toys myself and I agree with people they're not the best in quality, bits break off them and all sorts but tricky when the kids want them.

There is absolutely tonnes of stuff like this on eBay tho - people sell big bundles of the stuff that's where a lot of Mine came from and I also sold them too.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 20/11/2022 11:02

@AutumnFox
Infact I might have some bits kicking around - where abouts in the uk are you?

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 20/11/2022 11:09

Rockingcloggs response, report her to FB then block and think no more about it.

DoingTheBestICan · 20/11/2022 11:10

She was rude OP, not you.
On this note I myself listed for free, living room furniture from NEXT on my local FB selling page. I didn't want a penny for them, I just wanted them to go to someone who would make good use of them, the admin on the selling page withdrew the post and messaged me to tell me that I was misusing the page and that I should consider being kind before posting again.
I was like err, wtf? I messaged her back and explained that I was offering NEXT wooden furniture for free, a bookcase, nest of tables and a sideboard in fact and to me that was being kind. She just blocked me!
I like to think she got me confused with another post but luckily before she deleted the post a young couple saw it and came and picked them all up.
People can be very weird!

Gloryofthe80s · 20/11/2022 11:23

What sort of idiot can’t put the correct price on an ad? She sounds like a loon. Hopefully you didn’t give her any personal details.

Barkin2themoon · 20/11/2022 11:37

@seperatedmum
what a lovely thing to do

Barkin2themoon · 20/11/2022 11:39

@OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside
Lovely of you too

It might seem like a non incident to you but it’s made me feel like a cheap skate and I hate that.

You are not a cheap skate OP. The woman is barmy if she can’t see that suddenly trying to charge someone £50 for something that was supposed to be free would not be shocking off putting!

TheHumanExperience · 20/11/2022 11:51

AutumnFox · 20/11/2022 08:35

I wonder if you realise not filling in the price box, lists the item as free by default.
Sometimes this is an oversight, depending on if you list on your phone (easily done) or on a laptop or PC. It doesn't mean it was actually free.
However, the price should be clearly listed within the ad text, as should the location. This could be what happened here. I imagine it was worth well over £100 if they are selling for £50.

MissMogwai · 20/11/2022 11:58

Don't take her comment to heart as she sounds both nasty and thick.

Fair enough it was a mistake but no need to be a dick to you about it. £0 to £50 is a massive difference, of course people might change their mind.

IhateMattHancock · 20/11/2022 12:05

Had/have no desire to pay a penny for your cheap secondhand shite.

marmiteislife · 20/11/2022 13:00

Don’t let her get to you, OP. Yes, she was rude, but she’s a stranger you never have to interact with again so I wouldn’t get upset about it. This kind of thing happens all the time with online selling unfortunately. I’d probably laugh it off. “Well of course, everyone loves a freebie! I’m happy to pay £20 but can’t stretch to £50 I’m afraid.” Either that or just delete and find an alternative. 🤷‍♀️

DangerNoodles · 20/11/2022 13:06

£50 is a joke for second hand toys anyway. You could go to a toy shop and come away with some decent peppa toys for £50. At least then you know they will be clean and you can get a refund if they don't work.

jonnyjannoo · 20/11/2022 13:10

@TheHumanExperience that doesn't excuse the seller behaving like a twat though, does it?!

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 20/11/2022 14:29

Well obviously she's a ridiculous CF.

Although by offering money to people when you go round to collect free items, you are partly perpetuating this problem. It used to be, and should be, that there are adverts for free items (such as on Freecycle) and adverts for items for sale (such as on eBay or the ads in the local paper). Facebook marketplace seems to be muddying the waters, from what I can gather.

AutumnFox · 20/11/2022 15:57

@seperatedmum @OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside

Thank you so much for your kind offers. I ended up buying a set this morning - £32 from Argos. Very much appreciate the offers though, very kind of you both ❤️
