Pronunciation - would you correct?

I'm aware this isn't the right place to post but I wanted some advice about what you would have done.

We were out with friends a few months ago, they have a 6 year old dd. Friends are foreign. Let's call them Adam and Eve lol. I'm Friends with Adam and have met Eve on several occasions but don't know her well.

Eve says to Dd6 "what does this say"...Dd6 read it perfectly and pronounced it perfectly. Eve corrected dd6 for saying a local place wrong...(Eve pronounced it as it reads, rather than as its said). Obviously as I don't know her well I didn't want to interfere...but would you have corrected her (OK maybe not on front of dd6, but quietly to the side)?

I have several foreign friends and all are happy to get help with pronunciation or phrases...I just felt as I didn't know her very well, that it would be rude. I did consider trying to drop it into conversation, but I couldn't.

@ilovepixie How do people struggle with Ballymena? Do they say Bal-lee instead of Bal-la?

They say Bally men a Should be Bally mean a

Spanielsarepainless · 20/11/2022 17:30

Was it Happisburgh? Fowey? Mousehole?

ichundich · 20/11/2022 17:34

Why does this still bother you several months later? If Eve lives here, she'll soon figure out that many English words are pronounced differently to how they are spelled.

Liz1tummypain · 20/11/2022 17:36

Awlsford or Arlsford. That is the question

Angelofthenortheast · 20/11/2022 17:41

I've been on the train plenty of times and heard the announcement pronounced wrong - I don't think I'd correct if it was obvious what word the person meant. Everyone's got their own way of pronouncing

dwevil · 20/11/2022 17:49

Tintinhull, Hatch Beauchamp or Chideock?

Tintinhull, Hatch Beauchamp or Chideock?

Literally never heard of any of these either spoken or written 😁

Are they all in one region of the UK?

ClaudiusTheGod · 20/11/2022 20:05

How should you say Debach - not Dee-back? I’m interested to know.

never been sure about Holborn either - I’ve always said Ho-bun. Is that correct? And Mar-le-bone?

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/11/2022 20:34

DH is from Wishaw, pronounced Wishy by locals.

watcherintherye · 20/11/2022 20:51

Kircudbright?

A friend of mine always calls St. Pancras station ‘St. Pancreas’. I’ve never corrected her!

Is anyone else desperate to know how to say all there names?

I'll start
Cowbit said Cubbit (s lincs)
Boscastle said Bo’csle
Woolfardisworthy well I can’t recall but think it was Woolsery? It was so different it was in brackets on the road sign 😀

Yes. Woolfardisworthy is usually known as Woolsery.

But I have been to Boscastle many times and I've never heard of anyone pronouncing it in any way other than Boss Castle.

clary · 20/11/2022 21:35

Fair enough @Fifthtimelucky I must be thinking of somewhere else. Or just been misinformed.

Glad you didn't call me out on Cowbit as s ljncs is where I am from Grin

Fifthtimelucky · 20/11/2022 21:38

Ah well I've never been to Cowbit!

Cholmondely in Cheshire aka Chumley

Except in Salford where Cholmondeley Road is pronounced Chol mund early and I was wrong with Chumley.

Keighley in Yorkshire was one was always had to spell out, it's pronounced Keethly.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/11/2022 21:40

Uttoxeter?

clary · 20/11/2022 21:49

Fifthtimelucky · 20/11/2022 21:38

Ah well I've never been to Cowbit!

Haha no and I don't recommend it Smile

2bazookas · 20/11/2022 21:49

I would instantly have said " Eve, you're the one who made a mistake, DC is absolutely right. It is pronounced <properly pronounced> ".

Eve learnsa new pronunciation and some better manners.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/11/2022 21:53

Yes there are always regional differences.

As I said on a different thread today, I was surprised to discover that Beaconsfield Road in Hastings is pronounced Beacons Field rather than Beckons Field

Isittimeformynapyet · 20/11/2022 22:01

clary · 20/11/2022 00:47

Cowbit?
Boscastle?
Woolfardisworthy?

Oh yes, "Woolsery", I always think of that when this subject comes up!

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2022 01:27

An American once asked me how to pronounce Cirencester, thought I was kidding when I told him.

eh ?
i thought it was pronounced as spelt ?
i had a teacher who used to live near there, and she pronounced it as written.

alexdgr8 · 20/11/2022 22:06

Holborn is definitely said as:

Hoe-burn,
with equal stress on both parts.
i like plaistow.
that catches some out.
i actually think the correct pronunciation of plaistow sounds quite posh.
plarrrrstow.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/11/2022 22:34

There's also a Plaistow in West Sussex. I always assumed that it was pronounced in the same way as the one in London, but actually it's Plass-toh.

alexdgr8 · 20/11/2022 23:00

i was interested to find some little villages in derbyshire called holloway, hackney and kilburn.
utterly different topographically from their better known london twins.
obviously non-identical twins.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2022 23:08

i thought it was pronounced as spelt ?

Yes, exactly.Grin he'd got to grips with the quirks of other U.K. placenames like Worcester, so expected there to be some trick to Cirencester.

WindyHedges · 21/11/2022 04:19
