Dubious about shepherd's pie

OH and I are embarking on a healthy eating plan to lose weight. He has suggested shepherd's pie to go on the meal list as he "can't eat salad every day" (I like salad). I have never eaten shepherd's pie (I'm an immigrant) but it doesn't look very healthy to me (minced fatty lamb, potatoes and gravy with a few overcooked peas thrown in?), not to mention it sounds like it would taste disgusting! Isn't this something that featured heavily inschool dinners of the 1970s and should be banished to memory?

As many have said, cottage pie with lean mince beef can be healthier. Cottage pie was traditionally topped with swede rather than potato too, so that can add vitamins.

Re veg you can make a choice - either incorporate lots of veg, lentils etc, or make it plain (which is what i do - I just use mince, garlic, stock and maybe some chilli in the base) and serve with some really nice green vegetables, maybe carrots as well, on the side. You can alter the proportions according to taste!

Rude OP, I’ll take your bluntness with good grace though as you said you weren’t British 😀.

anyway, I make mine when I’m on a diet with Quorn, only mash the potatoes with milk and salt and make onion gravy. It works out very calorie friendly and very filling.

certainly beats a salad in November 😉.

Very kind. Thank you. 😎

Not overdone, the little burnt chewy leeks are delicious.

@RoachPussy Not keen on leeks but thank you for the suggestion. Hopefully there aren't any French people on this thread.

It’s just as nice without the leeks and cheese if you want to be healthier. I was dubious about the recipe as there’s cinnamon added but Delia is spot on with it.

My DH does a mean shepherds pie, not greasy, the key is lots of Lea & Perrins 😋
