Allergic reaction or chicken pox?

What does this look like to you?

It's typical that it would come up on a weekend when the pharmacy is closed.

She's fine in herself, not unwell whatsoever.

I'm conscious of the other children at her nursery and don't want to be sending her in on Monday if it is chicken pox.

It may be coincidental but it started to show up shortly after she ate a plate of Strawberries and had a smoothie. She's usually fine with fruit so it could be a coincidence. I'm baffled.

I will consult a GP on Monday but in the mean time, do you think it looks like chicken pox?

More likely to be hand foot and mouth presenting like that, I think typically chickenpox starts on the back/belly and spreads outwards.

Endwalker · 19/11/2022 18:08

Chickenpox tends to start on the trunk/torso and looks like fluid-filled spots.

The spots look like they could be hand, food and mouth, impetigo, or a reaction to the strawberries. Is it bothering her? If its itchy you could try some antihistamine, piriton syrup is suitable for age 1 and up. If it's not bothering her and she doesn’t seem unwell then just keep it clean and dry and monitor the situation.

SBAM · 19/11/2022 18:11

I should have added, you’ll likely know by morning if it is chickenpox as they’ll visibly have spread.
Hand foot and mouth will only be on face, hands, feet and bottom/genitals, and possibly inside her mouth and on her tongue.

IKnowMNcantdiagnosebut · 19/11/2022 18:15

Thank you for the replies!

It isn't bothering her until I touch the area / wiped her mouth - then it stings.

Hand foot and mouth.. it didn't even occur. Thank you. It certainly is possible. I've never dealt with it before. I'll have a read up about it now.

She does have a similar, single spot near her genitals. Just the one.

Be warned if it's HFM that you might catch it too, I once caught it from toddler DC and it was fucking awful - ulcers all under my tongue, worst sore throat I've ever had, and the rash was painful. Make sure you wash your hands lots and svoid touching your face and mouth

Bollocks2that · 19/11/2022 18:18

I agree, hand foot and mouth.

IKnowMNcantdiagnosebut · 19/11/2022 18:19

I've just checked baby DS and he has a couple of spots around his mouth too but he's teething and dribbling constantly so that may well be what his are from. I'll keep an eye.

Yes to HFM. They don't need to have it in all 3 areas either. When my 2 youngest got it they only had it on their feet, mouth and nappy area.

Oh bloody hell that sounds ghastly. Will definitely keep on top of hand washing.

Me too. I’ve never been so ill. It completely floored me for 3-4 weeks.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 19/11/2022 18:22

Absolutely looks like HF&M to me. It’s doing the rounds like wildfire round here at the moment.

Stock up on Calpol and ice lollies.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 19/11/2022 18:26

As others have said that is classic HFM.

ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 19/11/2022 18:26

Neither.

thats hand foot mouth.

Our house was full of it last week.

IKnowMNcantdiagnosebut · 19/11/2022 18:53

Ah it seems pretty unanimous then. Crap.

I've let my friend know. The girls spent the afternoon together so she's probably going to come down with it too. What a twit I am. Strawberries ffs.

I agree it looks like HFM.
It's not uncommon to get them on the groin either. It's rife where I live at the moment.

SBAM · 19/11/2022 19:56

To reassure you, DC1 has had it 3 times I think, DC2 twice. I’ve never caught it, and I don’t think they’ve ever caught it from each other. In the worst case one of them had the spots on their tongue and went off food for a day or so. Otherwise it’s been pretty mild and they’ve generally been fine in themselves.

CurlsLDN · 19/11/2022 19:58

If you’re in the UK the supermarket pharmacies will all be open now and tomorrow

IKnowMNcantdiagnosebut · 19/11/2022 20:10

That's reassuring SBAM, thank you. I could do without it personally it sounds horrid in adults.

I didn't realise that Curls, thank you. I'll get down to sainsburys tomorrow and get a few bits for her.

I think you're all right. DD is complaining of stinging feet and itching hands, her friend who she was with yesterday has also developed a temperature. Poor little things. No nursery for either of them this week then.
