To wonder how people miss their flights?

I had a domestic flight today, at check in they repeatedly called out 6 names for final call. About 3 showed.

I get missing the flight in general, but how do you miss it when you’ve checked in? Or not even being at the gate?

I also couldn’t be bothered with the hassle/stress of having to get luggage back from another city/country.

@BosaNova how do you check the other flights? sounds really useful info

I just look at departure boards. They are visible quite ahead. And usually same weekly.

This year alone I’ve been to Vietnam, Bali, Singapore, Thailand, Italy, Gibraltar, a work trip the USA and I’ll be celebrating New Years in Sydney.

This thread was merely just me detailing a random thought. Thought people would share their stories. Just lighthearted.

But no, you have to come on here and try and belittle me for absolutely no reason. I didn’t know about luggage tags because I’ve never given it much thought. Big difference is, I encourage people to learn and I don’t sneer at them for it.

No chance if you didn’t know you could check in in advance.

pompomdaisy · 19/11/2022 15:53

I was partying in a backpacking hostel the night before and slept in. 🤷‍♀️

OP - you seem to struggle with the idea of this thread being “lighthearted” with your telling off of posters! 😂

Earlier this year I flew from Heathrow. We were super early, which I always am for flights and booked into a lounge. There aren’t any announcements in a lounge and their boards weren’t working. I was checking the app but I can see how you could easily miss a flight if you weren’t checking.

WeeWillyWinkie9 · 19/11/2022 16:04

Depends on situations. I was delayed on the first leg of my journey and so missed my connecting flight. At the connecting airport they said that they could put me on another flight but that it was leaving almost immediately and were we fit enough to reach the gate within minutes. We said yes. As soon as they had put it in on the computer our names were being called on the tannoy.

Readinginthesun · 19/11/2022 16:11

I once went away on a city break with 3 friends one of whom was notoriously late . You know the type ; ALWAYS late for meals, drinks , whatever . No NH issues just one of those people who faffs and expects others to wait .
Anyway we got to the airport ( cutting it fine as friend wasn’t ready when taxi called ) checked in etc and made our way to gate . Friend insisted she wanted to go shopping even though the rest of us said there wasn’t time .

Time to board and no sign , phoned , no reply . Tannoy put out . Nothing . The rest of us boarded and were just settling down when she phoned one of us demanding to know where we were ! We told her to run and she would make it . She decided to go to the bathroom . Missed her flight .

Ah I see. That’s frustrating!

It was not fun.

I think its easy to forget that not all airports have good and wide reaching comms, even when relatively large. Sometimes even large airports have areas with poor comms.
Also the big hub airports are not the only places with nightmare transfer distances/times - inefficient or insufficient staff can make it difficult.

OTOH I am a packing ninja and can survive lengthy trips on hand luggage which reduces some of the risks!

Yes chance. Just because I posted a thread without much thought in it .., to you know start a conversation doesn’t mean you need to continually try and belittle me.

What happened afterwards? Was she angry? I’d have done the same as you.

TBH I'm sure we've had the question posed by the OP asked before...and there's no great mystery to all this...

Why do people check-in physically then not make the flight?

There are those that lose track of time, (breakfast/pub/shopping) but there are others (many on some days) who get held ups in security, others simply get hit by Force Majeur on the way to the gate such as a sudden onset of medical problems/illness,, family emergency back at home......the list is pretty endless......

There's not really much point in speculating why it happens and I certainly wouldn't be thinking anybody who missed a flight was badly organised or not well travelled.

No point speculating, after writing out an entire list of why someone might miss a flight.

And it’s actually called Force Majeure which would be applicable to events like an earthquake happened in the UK and the departure gate 8 was destroyed - not a sudden illness.

Stop being a goady fucker. Honestly, like your last three posts are just constantly trying to get a rise out of the OP.

Yes. Everyone read the OP. You’re missing that people can check in BEFORE they set off for the airport.

@waterwithaview

That was a list of the sort of reasons I've encountered over the years...I wouldn't go around speculating which applied on any particular day.

As for the use and abuse of FM, very interesting.

By being a hypocrite yourself. Stop getting kicks by constantly baiting someone. It’s repulsive.

When we landed we all had angry messages from her . Someone phoned her and suggested she got a later flight but she didn’t want to .
She then tried to get us to refund her money ! When we all refused , she said she didn’t want anything to do with any of us .

Refund her money? So the three of you would pay her back from your own money?

This thread is raising my heart rate!

Years ago when ds was about a year old, we went to Portugal with the ILs. When we got to the airport and checked in, they acted like we had the whole day before we had to board. Then MIL wanted to sit down and have a full breakfast before we went to the gate and even got into the queue at the restaurant. I was starting to get v stressed at this point: WE.HAVE.TO.GO!!

As we got to the gate, our names were being called. I like to be early for things: this was awful!

My MIL was like this, I’m just glad I never had to fly with her, would have been a nightmare. She just refused to hurry even if she knew she was going to be late for things.

Yes , she said “ it wasn’t her fault” ( it was) and she was angry she lost flight and hotel money .
We said no.
