Started feeling a bit crap at work on Thursday. Morning. By Thursday night I felt like I had a head cold. Yesterday started with a really sore mouth - as if my mouth and throat was full of ulcers, bit of a cough. Headache.
This morning I have no sense of taste or smell. I know this can happen to a degree with a cold but It’s not just a lessened sense, it’s gone completely. My coffee tastes like hot water.

Are we still testing for Covid?? I’ve seen that you can get lateral flow tests from boots but would you bother?

YABU - don’t be spreading your Covid germs
YANBU - treat it like a cold

I don't know anyone outside of healthcare who's still testing.

Either you're well enough to work or you're not, IMO.

wildthingsinthenight · 19/11/2022 13:31

My son came home from school feeling really poorly last week and I tested him as he is so rarely ill. He was positive which was useful to know as he was about to see elderly grandparents.
I felt I couldnt taste food properly on Thursday and I tested positive too.

People saying there is no point..what about elderly or vulnerable people you may come into contact with?
People saying treat it like a cold, carry on etc are not right IMO.

I was very upset to see I was positive because I had it March 2020 and have Long Covid and have been disabled by it. Can't work. Chronic pain. Chronic fatigue. Nerve damage in hands and feet. Part time walking stick user now.
It is terrible. And there are a lot of us out there.

Please do not be blazé about it.

It is not just about being fit for work

MenopauseSucks · 19/11/2022 13:37

My Mum's care home suggested to visitors that they test before visiting. I think most families used to test - I know I certainly did.
I don't test for any other reasons.

PupInAPram · 19/11/2022 13:38

Our HR have told us if you are ill stay home, if you feel well enough come to work, regardless if you are covid positive. I was told I had to stay in work when I tested positive in advance of visiting an elderly relative. I work in a school. I felt like typhoid Mary 😞

Long covid has completely changed my life. I still test if I’m meeting people as I wouldn’t want to be responsible passing it on to others. But I understand we need to live with it. But surly if you had a horrible cold you’d avoid spreading it to people anyway

It is when you have bills to pay 🙄

I'm not getting into a debate about whether we should be isolating for COVID or not. The two sides will never agree.

I suppose when you have been hit so catastrophically by it you then come at testing from a different angle.

I have covid now and am testing due to elderly parents - one of them in a care home - there are definitely people still testing to protect their loved ones

DdraigGoch · 19/11/2022 14:21

I wouldn't go out of my way to get hold of a testing kit if I didn't have any left lying about the house.

With those symptoms, you shouldn't really be going out - covid or not.

BCBird · 19/11/2022 14:24

I hope you feel better soon. I.still trst regularly because I feel I am.being responsible doing so. My friends and I test before meeting because we do not want to unwittingly pass thi gs into each other.

robinsnest1967 · 19/11/2022 14:33

I'm on day 4 and tested again today and my line is even darker. I look after elderly dementia patients and there's no way I would risk their health and life by being around them.

Are your bills more important than those of the people you've given covid to?

Yes. To you. Who's going to pay them if you don't?

Well, yes.

Unless those people are going to pay my bills for me?

Nobody is testing for Covid. People who say they have Covid are probably just trying to scam a few days off work. Just treat it like a cold because, even if it is Covid, we all now know that it is not a serious illness.

Meanehile for those of us in the real world...* *

You don't need to test but you should stay home while you have symptoms

zingally · 19/11/2022 14:56

I think most people are just treating it like a fluey cold these days. Stay at home for a few days if you can.

There are no rules anymore if people are not going to get paid for going off sick ,than a lot of people will work with covid if they feel able too ,covid is going nowhere ,this is all part of living with it

Yes, I'm always amused when people imagine that's some kind of gotcha.

pastypirate · 19/11/2022 15:23

No. I'm not paying for tests

Fenella123 · 19/11/2022 15:29

I test before I'm going to be indoors with someone vulnerable. So, before visiting my CEV friend who is still suffering from the effects of a (probably) COVID-triggered stroke; before seeing relatives in their 80s.

I don't test (unless I have some sort of symptom) before going to lunch with friends in a crowded cafe. They're sitting fairly close to people on other tables as well, it's not going to make a huge difference to their risk.

I do test if I have symptoms and I'm going to meet up with people though. Had COVID this summer, was grim, and I'm still not quite right. Wouldn't wish that on someone, happy to lay out £2 to check.

coffeeheart · 19/11/2022 15:30

If you're able to stay at home/away from people until you're better, then I don't see the point in testing. If you are required to be in an office building or see people, I'd take a test. For most people it's a rotten cold but it still has the potential to make vulnerable people really poorly so it's best to play safe.

TirisfalPumpkin · 19/11/2022 15:33

I would test for that, yeah. If only because my work is very ‘if it’s a cold, you’re not even ill, power through - if it’s COVID OMG stay home’ - when often you can feel as bad with a cold.

hope you’re feeling better soon.
