To love working in A and E?

AHP here and I love working in A and E. It is very busy at times and understaffed but so satisfying to work on the front line. It can be heart breaking at times though, especially when a patient has no loved ones.

I have a friend who is an A&E nurse and loves it. She is with people when they are scared and vulnerable. No shift is ever the same.

So nice to hear this as I have come across some unfriendly and impatient members of staff in a&e.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 19/11/2022 02:48

My friends who work in A&E positively live for it. It takes a certain type of empathetic thrill-seeker, but if that’s your profile then I definitely see the appeal.

I think this is awesome..thankyou thankyou thankyou. I work in the NHS and I lie awake at night worrying about front line staff. You're awesome.

PinkVitamins · 19/11/2022 06:48

Rather you than me - although you'd probably say the same about my job (I'm a midwife) 😁
A&E looks like hell on earth to me the few times I have had to go down to monitor a pregnant woman or something, but I'm very glad there are people who choose to work there and happy you enjoy it!

carefulcalculator · 19/11/2022 06:49

Of course yanbu. But presumably you'd be even happier if patients were waiting less time!

piratehooker · 19/11/2022 07:01

Not at all! I have so much admiration for anyone who works in A&E. I'm in community-based nursing, and know categorically that I wouldn't be able to be a safe and competent HCP in an emergency room. A few of my cohort went straight into A&E on qualifying and I have such respect for them.

Every branch of health care needs people who have a passion for it. I have a lot of respect for the podiatrists I work alongside, but have never fully understood why someone would want to work solely with feet. However it's each to their own... I know I must weird people out with my love for palliative care and fascination with leg ulcers and sacral wounds!

ChocHotolate · 19/11/2022 07:03

You're not alone. 20yrs in various A&Es in central london and although I'm moving to a smaller walk-in centre, I wouldn't change specialities

malificent7 · 19/11/2022 07:05

I couldn't be a midwife although i have so much respect for them and I definitely couldn't work in the childrens' hospital again...far too traumatic.

I triage in A&E,love it. Never know who or what will book in next!

Runningintolife · 19/11/2022 07:17

I have finally found a job I live for and its amazing, so I totally get it and thank you for it - just be careful to get some balance and don't burn out, I am aware I sometimes overwork because of loving it.

vdbfamily · 19/11/2022 07:18

I used to work in A&E and absolutely loved my job. Keep up the good work.

dottiedodah · 19/11/2022 07:22

My cousin is a doctor in a busy London hospital, loves a and e .like you say loves the challenge, no repetition. Good to know for us patients

UseOfWeapons · 19/11/2022 07:25

I used to love working in A & E, but I simply can’t do the night shifts any more. It was wonderful, something different everyday. I love my current job for the same reason, even if the conditions are the same, the people are different, and that’s what makes it completely absorbing.
I'm so glad you have found you love, long may you continue, and thank you and your colleagues for the wonderful work you do in such ridiculously difficult times.💐

flowngo · 19/11/2022 07:29

I'm a Paeds bed manager and I love it too, and the drama! Making differences to peoples lives every day, plus just being extremely grateful for on tap medical advice.

CatWithARabbit · 19/11/2022 07:31

Really lovely to read this. You are all amazing but A&E are particularly special, thank you.
