I was about to grab a turkey and cranberry sandwich yesterday at a major retailer when I noticed on the package that 5% of that purchase would go to Shelter.

Why are we being increasingly forced nowadays to contribute to causes we may not necessarily agree with in this way? Why don't businesses stick to selling goods? Why the constant virtue signalling? It's annoying

I do not intend to comment on this charity in particular, but I have seen my fair share of pensioners being out of pocket to evict problem tenants who were in a position to pay the rent and look after properties but simply didn't want to and just played the system.

The results of charities activities are not always 100% positive, so customers shouldn't be forced to contribute in this way.

Why do businesses assume that their customers agree with the charities they pick? The constant virtue signalling is patronising and insulting.

As I have said before, let's meet again in 10 years' time and see if all these retailers have gone under because of their dreadful charity support. I'm sure OP can come up with a fantastic methodology that establishes causation without a shadow of a doubt.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 29/11/2022 18:11

I don't think, OP, that you can suggest that lack of statistical evidence undermines the opposing case unless you can cite statistical evidence that supports your own

There are no reliable statistics supporting either case.

That's why those who say 'the young think this' or 'we are the majority and retailers cater for us' are talking nonsense

Given you have rejected any methods of finding out what people think, there's no point in providing proof, you'll just say it was biased (no matter how carefully segmented/composed to represent the target audience).

thehorsehasnowbolted · 29/11/2022 18:18

charity partnerships don't harm retailers - we've had experts confirm this but no sensible evidence come from you so far

'Industry experts' must be filled with dread at the thought of having to earn their keep and do some actual creative work instead of pushing political charity affiliations and producing the same old out of context a dime dozen photographs out of image banks

I understand them. I would be terrified too

Any evidence for the statements you have just made? You really seem to have the inside track on what advertising and marketing experts actually do, in fact you seem to believe that you know more than the people who have come to post on this thread who are actual advertising and marketing experts. So I await your revelations with bated breath.

I'm just commenting on what I see with my own eyes. I don't need to be reassured gaslighted by 'experts'

Currently advertising seems to have been reduced to pushing Marxist anti-British politics and pasting samey photographs from image banks. That's it. I don't personally encounter much else. Do you?

You should've gone to Specsavers.

pointythings · 29/11/2022 19:09

Oooh, we're on 'Marxist' and 'Anti-British' now. Can we have some specific examples of campaigns which embody those things that you have encountered recently?

Also seconding Specsavers.

Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!

The conspiracy of experts, who have somehow managed to create a completely fictitious industry for decades, complete with academic papers and a major role in business schools.

pointythings · 29/11/2022 20:28

@Sigma33 a Marxist and anti-British conspiracy, no less!

Sigma33 · 29/11/2022 21:32

I know. It is exciting to be one of the first to hear about it. Can't wait to see the Grand Uncover in the weeks to come 😮

To paraphrase

I have my own biased assumptions based on my own bigoted views and I reject all actual scientific evidence, or the fact this successful partnership has gone on for a decade extremely successfully….because, you know, my baseless opinion means more than actual data driven evidence 🤔

And anyone who disagrees with me is a Marxist and anti-British 😂

TIL that the homeless charity Shelter is Marxist and anti-British at the same time.

What is a British value then OP? The royals hoarding land and wealth and the opposite of that is apparently charity?

You’re a balloon.

pointythings · 30/11/2022 10:39

@luxxlisbon OP is certainly revealing her true self. Donating to a homelessness and tenants support charity is Marxist and anti-British. Donating to a church is presumably incredibly patriotic.

OP's mind would probably be blown to learn that I'm an atheist and a socialist who happily donates to Shelter and also to a local church because of the excellent work they do running a community food bank. Zero sum thinking is so limiting.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 30/11/2022 14:35

Bloody hell. Good point. Major UK retail chains and all those hip marketing agencies - they're all anti-British Marxists.

I mean - Jesus - now you point it out, so much falls into place.

The bastards.

Sigma33 · 30/11/2022 14:50

And there was I assuming they were good capitalists, hooked on profits and the-workers-not-owning-the-means-of-production.

I was blind. BLIND, I tell you...

Excellent! As long as you do it willingly and not forced through the purchase of a sandwich

No one is forced. Unless now you're making up some kind of reality in which a gun was held to your head?

I can see it now. Janette at M&S wearing a t-shirt with Karl Marx, pointing an American gun at your head (to aid the anti-british propaganda).

She tells you to pick, as she points the gun at your head and the other hand at the turkey sandwich:

Life or death?

You explain you're christian and cannot stand the idea of helping the homeless.

You narrowly miss death as Janette gets distracted by the devil himself.

You live to tell the tale on Mumsnet.

Yeah you're right it doesn't seem too farfetched.

pointythings · 30/11/2022 18:29

@Miajk I can't wait to see this made for Netflix.

forced through the purchase of a sandwich

😂😂😂

@thehorsehasnowbolted did you have no option between a) buy the sandwich, b) be executed, or c) have any other food withheld until you starved to death?

If b or c please call 999 asap. If a that was your choice.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/11/2022 20:33

I'm afraid the OP lost me with niggles about shelter and yet happy to donate to 'my church' - when we lived in Canterbury the Church of England had the reputation locally as awful Petty, harsh landlords.

There is something about a certain type of Christian that is remarkably unchristian like- see Esther McVey for details

KatherineJaneway · 01/12/2022 10:57

forced through the purchase of a sandwich

Again OP, no one is forced to buy a sandwich from M&S

pointythings · 01/12/2022 11:14

@KatherineJaneway do keep up. It was Janette from M&S, in her Karl Marx T-shirt, with the American gun. Like in the Limited Edition Charity Affiliations Cluedo, available now in a retailer near you.
