To not wear the uniform trousers?

Long time poster under a different name.

My work uniform is the same for men and women and the trousers are tight in my case across my bum. I have suspected endo and have a very heavy flow; have to wear two of the maternity thick pads at a time on my first three days. I've put my trousers on and it looks like I'm wearing a nappy, my DP has said it's very obvious. I have put on a long black skirt with the rest of the uniform. The new manager started yesterday and is a man so I don't know what to say but Aibu to not wear the trousers?

Just so as to not drip feed, I've worked there for three weeks so this is the first time I've realised this. Have worn full uniform until today.

Would other black trousers work?
Might be better than a skirt

Twospaniels · 17/11/2022 10:23

Just tell your manager the trousers don’t fit. Offer to buy a pair yourself of the same colour.
If he persists then tell him the real reason in all it’s glory, most men hate too much detail about ‘women’s thing’ and he will soon agree with you

ohidoliketobe · 17/11/2022 10:24

YANBU. Say they don't fit you. Not sure about a skirt though - is there a safety issues? Climbing up and down ladders, risk of a loose hem bring caught in anything? I'd wear a more comfortable pair of black trousers.

hendi · 17/11/2022 10:28

No safety issue with the skirt. I don't have work smart clothes because I've never needed them before and was told this was a uniform job so didn't buy any. Its a long skirt.

Can't you tell your manager that the trousers don't fit, and get a bigger pair sent?

hendi · 17/11/2022 10:30

@Whataretheodds I can but that won't make a difference for today when I start in half an hour.

I hate work clothes that are "unisex" because they're always cut to fit men's bodies, not ours (because men are the default humans after all). I've stopped wearing elements of my uniform because they fit badly and look shit, and when I'm asked why that's what I'll say. I would just say they don't fit, but as PP says, don't hold back on the details if pressed. It's rubbish that we're expected to wear badly fitting men's clothing at work.

Whataretheodds · 17/11/2022 10:31

Wear the skirt, take the trousers with you.

Thinkbiglittleone · 17/11/2022 10:31

Ask them to order you a bigger size as they don't fit properly.Confused

Another pair of trousers that fit in the meantime.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 17/11/2022 10:31

Yanbu but if the management have an issue with it you can get some looser trousers. Next do plain black trousers in a huge range of different cuts/lengths/shapes for all sorts.

Having the same uniform trousers for both men and women is inherently discriminatory. Men and women have different body shapes. Women have wider hips and trousers cut for a male body shape will always be uncomfortable and ill-fitting, because for most women having the cut wide enough around the hips to not feel too tight will mean they are so loose at the waist they fall down. (I assume that they have gone for a "default = male" design for this uniform?). Unless the waist are generously elasticated in which case you may just need to go up a size or two?

drspouse · 17/11/2022 10:35

How will bigger trousers help if they fit at the waist but currently don't fit at the bum? They will just fall down if they fit at the bum.

ButterCrackers · 17/11/2022 10:37

Wear what best helps you do your work. I had heavy bleeding (now hopefully controlled by the pill but you never know) and could not have worn trousers. I had sudden floods that went up the back and front. This was despite a super plus tampon and two night time pads. A skirt makes it less likely to bleed onto the fabric as you can sit on your side a bit or just not have fabric right on you as the flood is happening. It’s horrid so do what’s best for you. If you get asked explain just say what’s happening.

Same as with someone with a bigger hip to waist ratio - wear a belt or take the waist in. You can’t wear trousers that are too tight in one place because the alternative is that they’ll then be too big somewhere else.

Singleandproud · 25/01/2023 11:04

Ugh have reported my post, I didn't even purposefully click on this post and was replying to a completely different one.

OP I think you just tell the manager the trousers didn't fit or were faulty and that was the best option. Would they really be able to tell the difference if you got a pair of Next (or similar) work trousers? I'd put money on that they wouldn't unless branded. If he kicks up a fuss then tell him the truth in all the gory detail and hell soon have enough.
