Would you see a GP for a cold?

I have had a cold for 6 weeks, it just won't clear sometimes it get a bit better but then it gets worse again but it's making my asthma worse, I am waking up 2 or 3 times a night for my inhaler because my chest is so tight it hurts and I can't breathe hardly, my asthma is usually well controlled.

I'm shattered because I'm not sleeping and I still have a house and a 5 year old and a job and I'm just miserable. I cried in work yesterday for the first time ever over something stupid because it was just one thing too much if that makes sense.

But I feel stupid going to the doctors over a cold :( would you go the GP?

Thanks

I would if it's having a negative impact on your asthma.

Run4it2 · 17/11/2022 08:03

I would say go to the doctor -- it could be that you have a low grade chest infection that isn't clearing.

HappyPumpkin81 · 17/11/2022 08:04

I wouldn't for a simple cold, but yours sounds more complicated. I think after 6 weeks you're entitled to ask for help

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 17/11/2022 08:05

YWBVVU not to seek help for worsening asthma symptoms, whatever is causing them.

Please take care of yourself OP. Flowers

TalkisChips · 17/11/2022 08:06

I wouldn’t go for a cold, but I would go as it’s affecting your asthma.

nomoreflyingducks · 17/11/2022 08:11

Well yes in these circumstances because your chest is tight, difficulty with breathing are having to use your inhaler.

Mummieslncorporated · 17/11/2022 08:13

A cold shouldn't last six weeks, and it's affecting your asthma, so yes.

Don't say the word 'cold' to the receptionist if you can avoid it. Say you have a cough, if that's accurate, if you think it could be a chest infection, say that. But definitely say that you've been unwell for six weeks and your asthma is keeping you awake.

Cinnabomb · 17/11/2022 08:15

I’m a gp and I’d want to see you with that history.

Indoctro · 17/11/2022 08:15

That doesn't sound like a cold to me. A cold last 2/3 days not 6 weeks

You need to see them about your asthma and whatever is going on behind it

Hurrayforfridays · 17/11/2022 08:16

You've had a cold for six weeks - definitely go to your gp

Zingy123 · 17/11/2022 08:17

My DD has had a cold/cough for 10 weeks. We eventually went to the GP and he said it can take up to 12 weeks to clear.

Ponoka7 · 17/11/2022 08:17

Don't minimise your asthma. People still die from asthma attacks. For whatever reason yours is no longer being controlled. On that basis, you need to see a doctor.

Cheeeeislifenow · 17/11/2022 08:18

You are not alone ol I have had a cold for over a month...but I am in immeuno suppressants for auto immune condition. I am really struggling with tiredness from it. If it's affecting your asthma it needs to be checked.

brighterthanthemoon · 17/11/2022 08:19

Give them a ring OP. They might ask you to see a nurse practitioner instead but they can get you to the GP if they think it's needed.

PearlclutchersInc · 17/11/2022 08:19

You would be going because you need to get your asthma back under control not because of "a cold". That's a bit different.

Zuno · 17/11/2022 08:20

OP - ask to see the nurse who is trained in your practice in Asthma - I find them much better than the GP (and my GP is awesome), but for things like this - I always book with them. They can get a prescription written in the same appointment by a GP if needed.

KangarooKenny · 17/11/2022 08:21

You absolutely should go. I’d suggest you need antibiotics and steroids.

Hankunamatata · 17/11/2022 08:21

Getting asthma under control is important. See gp

Muststopeating · 17/11/2022 08:22

Came on to say not a chance in hell.

But in your circumstances, yes I would.

Tell the receptionist that you've been unwell for 6 weeks and that it is affecting your asthma.

Asher33 · 17/11/2022 08:23

Is it definitely a cold?

Pythonese · 17/11/2022 08:24

Good luck with trying to see a GP.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 17/11/2022 08:25

My asthma nurse said the sign of having the asthma under control with the preventer inhaler is not having to use the blue one
Yours is not under control
Ring the doctor

Notjusta · 17/11/2022 08:26

Please contact your surgery ASAP and ask if there is an asthma nurse you can speak to and/of GP appointment. Asthma UK have trained nurses available on their helpline too. www.asthma.org.uk/advice/resources/helpline/

IDontWantToBeAPie · 17/11/2022 08:26

Yes in your case as it could be a chest infection
