What is wrong with my face?

I’m desperate for help or advice from anyone here.

Over the last week or so I’ve had some bad pain in my bottom jaw. it feels like toothache but I couldn’t pin point to you which exact tooth hurts, it just feels generally really sore from my around molar tooth onwards. It hurts to eat but not in a specific tooth.

it’s only on that side and it’s on and off, when it’s off it’s fine and when it’s on it’s been so bad it’s stopping me sleeping. painkillers takes the edge off it but then it hurts again

the pain feels strange- it’s not sharp but it feels really deep and like a really severe and heavy unbearable ache. If actually feel like I’ve been thumped in the face. It feels like it’s coming from my jaw itself- if you press the soft squishy skin in your chin and sort of feel under/round your lower jaw bone, that’s where it feels like it’s coming from. All the way from there across and up into my ear.

I have had TMD for the last 10 years and have had it all checked at the hospital. I know the type of pain that can cause but this feels completely different to that.

i have an appointment at my dentist later this week (first available appointment for toothache!) so hopefully I’ll find out for sure what is causing it, but in the meantime, does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Or has anyone else has anything similar to this?

for context- I’ve had chronic infections in an upper tooth on the same side. I’ve had several antibiotics, fillings, RCTs and it has only just started to improve and get better. I’m not sure if it could even be related but as the face pain now is on the same side I thought it was worth mentioning, although the pain is lower this time not upper

Abscess maybe ?

Katrinawaves · 16/11/2022 21:15

Could it be a stone in your salivary gland?

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/11/2022 21:25

A wisdom tooth coming through possibly.

ofwarren · 16/11/2022 21:28

It still could be your TMJ.
I have problems with mine and when it flares up it sounds like what you describe. The pain is deep and sore to touch. It gives me horrendous ear ache.

ImEasyLikeSundayMorning · 16/11/2022 21:29

Sounds very much like an abscess to me.

KatieKline · 16/11/2022 21:29

Sounds like an abscess to me, absolutely awful, hope you get seen by a dentist sooner than your appointment.

tb4122 · 16/11/2022 21:33

I've had this and it was presumed to be a TMJ problem, but actually turned out to be a tooth where the filling was touching the nerve. I never suspected the tooth because it had just been filled and it never felt like a tooth, it felt like my jaw itself. Happened again with another tooth that needed a root canal filling but I knew to head to the dentist as it had happened before. So my money would be on something dental.

Pixiedust1234 · 16/11/2022 21:34

Stupid question here. When you are at your desk, or sitting in the corner of your sofa, are you leaning on your hand? Apparently I do that when I'm reading something on my laptop at the table and despite being very comfortable at the time the next day my jaw/teeth are agony. Im having to consciously sit on my hands to avoid doing it Blush

WonderingWanda · 16/11/2022 21:41

I had this years ago. Excruciating pain and eventually it turned into Shingles on my face. Are you run down?

Cancelledtwiceover · 16/11/2022 21:43

Teeth grinding at night, strains your jaw. Are you stressed

stayathomegardener · 16/11/2022 21:50

I've had pressure in two teeth on either side of my upper jaw for six months, happens if my head is unsupported. At one point in September I was in bed 23 hours a day as the pressure got so horrific.

I've had dental x rays and bite checked, mri and neurology and tentative conclusion is TMD.

Zero help but I feel your pain.

stayathomegardener · 16/11/2022 21:52

In case it's useful I've started cranial osteopathy which is helping and CBD patches.

OnceYouKPop · 16/11/2022 21:52

Atypical trigeminal neuralgia can behave like this

declutteringmymind · 16/11/2022 21:54

90 percent of the time it's dental. A tooth dying is the likely cause but other common causes are broken tooth, wisdom tooth abscess or gum abscess.

All of these pain can be non specific and will localise but get yourself to a dentist for a diagnosis, or further investigation

IfOnlyOCould · 16/11/2022 22:00

Unfortunately I am an expert in toothache.I've had a lot of problems with my teeth and I've found it's sometimes extremely difficult to pinpoint where the pain is coming from. The dentist told me this was normal. That dull, deep ache sounds very typical too.

CherrySocks · 16/11/2022 22:01

I thought it could be trigeminal neuralgia too - but you need to see GP not let us randomly diagnose you!

Summerfun54321 · 16/11/2022 22:54

It’s medical diagnosis roulette time! Just wait to see your dentist. It’s only a couple of days.
