To think that fresh Tomatoes taste better than canned?

So, I am trying out his new thing where I am resisting to buy canned tomatoes and instead use fresh tomatoes when cooking my sauces.

I have done this for about a month now and I must say, when I first cooked my minestrone soup with the fresh tomatoes, it tasted gooood! Even my DC's, who are fussy eaters, asked for seconds and they hate when I make minestrone soup. Same with pasta sauces etc. I wonder why this is. Has anyone done the same?

Wholeheartedly agree! I made a bolognaise the other day, I put passata in & then chopped up some fresh tomatoes instead of putting canned ones in. It tasted delish! 😋

Do you take the skins off the fresh tomatoes when you cook them? If you do, what’s the best way to do that? I love tomatoes but I don’t like the skins when they are cooked.

Ah no wonder! I always take the skins off line. It does taste good doesn't it?

Yes, I take the skins off the tomatoes- I think doing it this way helps the tomatoes to dissolve more into the sauce than leaving the skins on.

Surely any fresh ingredient tastes better than its canned equivalent? I’d have thought the only reason we use canned is for convenience, not for superior flavour!

To take the skins off you can sit them in a bowl of very hot water and the skins will split and therefore be easy to peel off.

Depends on the tomato and the can.

Is a naice canned plum tomato better than an out of season Tesco salad. Probably

Canned tomatoes may have more flavour than out of season fresh ones.
The availability of decent fresh toms throughout the year has improved a lot in recent years though.

I don’t think the fact that fresh is generally better than canned anything is new information? In this specific example, quality varies massively, though.

Good quality fresh tomatoes are better than most things on Earth, but those are hard to come by. Most fresh tomatoes (regardless of quality) are better than generic tinned ones. But good quality tinned tomatoes (San Marzano, for example) are better than any fresh tomatoes you’re likely to find in the U.K., particularly when tomatoes aren’t in season.

Thanks! @LeSquigh

Who would have guessed that something fresh tastes better than something that's been stuck in a sealed can for months!

Sometimes in a chase for cheapest stuff we forget the taste of food.
Asda chopped toms are ok,will use them as ingredient in many dishes, but…
I „treated” myself to a jar of Mutti tomato sauce and Italian spaghetti. The difference is staggering.
Tomatoes out of season are in the same category as strawberries-tasteless.
Speaking from experience, UK’s imported fruit and veg is crap.
