Is there even any point in bidding for council housing?

I don't see the point in being in the queue for a council house, and even bidding, if you're consistently place number 250 and there are always people in front of you joining the queue? I can't afford my rent now my landlord has increased it so I am being forced to stay here until I essentially get kicked out, made homeless then probably put into a dump by the council, as nobody else will take me on as a single mother when they've got 30 other couples and higher earners in the queue in front of me. Took me 6 months do consistent viewings to get this place. How did it get like this? Will something change? I'm really hoping that when the cost of living improves landlords will be forced to reduce their rents, but I suppose most won't. Just a rant really as my tent increasing really knocked me (only been here a short time) and suddenly feeling very vulnerable....

Did you agree to the rental increase? You could say no, he can go through a lengthy long process to evict you, the council would have to house you then.

I’m meant to be offered a property I’m in full statutory homeless band but I have arrears ( no fault of my own was a mix up when I had to flee the house to temp address) which I am paying back on a payment plan every month as I was a previous tenant with same housing landlord, this house that I bid on is with the same housing landlord but the housing lady rang me and said there was work that had to be done because my ex partner decided to put a conservatory on the property took a wall and window out to do it the lady from the housing said the case is with her manager to make a decision if I can be offered the property because the housing had to rectify this back to putting a wall in a window and knock the conservatory down she then said would I be willing to clear the amount off which she said worked out a total of £5000 I told her I never wanted that conservatory putting up but he did it anyway without permission he was on the tenancy agreement too but we split up and he moved out so I put the tenancy in just my name really hope me and my children can get this house as we have been in emergency accommodation since January due to fleeing DV from most recent ex partner can anyone help me please with what might happen with this offer? 🙏

Hiya,

I am in a similar position - please can I ask how it went, this situation is so rubbish :(

Curlycurls23 · 15/06/2023 21:46

Message was meant for @BlondeWaves !

Redebs · 15/06/2023 21:52

So sorry you're in this situation OP.
You know the process - once you're actually homeless, you will be given temporary accommodation in a hotel or flat. Your points will go up rapidly and then you'll be in with a chance of an offer.

It may be a few months, but stay positive.
There are thousands of mums and their children going through this and it's heartbreaking.

Please let us know when you're housed. All the best.

The situation was caused intentionally by successive Tory governments. That makes it even more evil. It's not just an unavoidable issue, but created deliberately by social housing policy.

The rent is going up in 8 weeks. Which is essentially going to be the payment for the 7th month of rent. Which is perfectly legal unfortunately.

Sounds like your landlord has a "Buy to Let Mortgage"

They are pushing the last 6m mortgage interest rises directly to you (this is probably also why they accepted you).

How large of an increase are they asking?

Just realised this was necroposted.

Ignore my last post.

necroposted

Sounds like something Ted Bundy would do <shudder>

@BlondeWaves

"I've just accepted I'm not going to get a council house unless I essentially make myself homeless. Which I will be if I get kicked out. I think it's insane that regular people can't afford to live a relatively normal life anymore."

I agree with you. Everyone should be entitled to a roof over their head that's fit for purpose. Surely it should be a fundamental right in this day and age.
I hope you get something soon.

Just out of interest, who would be ahead of a single mother with a young child? I wish it was better for you and everyone else in this situation.

People who are already homeless, fleeing current DV, have got disabilities, have just left prison, careleavers.
