Is it just me with terrible teeth?

Long story short I have been for a checkup and all my back teeth are decaying and I need 10 fillings.

I sobbed when I left. How has this happened to me?! I last went start of 2021, I do love chocolate/sweet treats but not excessively! I don't drink mostly water (no juice, fizzy drinks, sugar in tea or coffee), and brush my teeth twice a day.

I feel so embarrassed and ashamed.I'm only in my 20's. I have just had my third baby though. Does pregnancy fuck up your teeth?

I admit to liking sugary food but I feel like I don't eat more than the average person! And I always see people drinking fizzy drinks ect. Do others suffer with bad dental health??!

Me 😭

I always have to have a filling pretty much everytime I go. However I do drink a lot of sugar free fizzy drinks and eat a lot of sugar.

I don't know anyone else who needs the dental work I always do either so I always come out feeling really upset too!

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 14/11/2022 20:53

I had this. My dentist growing up always said everything was perfect then suddenly when I was 21 a new dentist took over and I needed a good bit of work. Seemed the original dentist said the same to a lot of patients. That along with pregnancy and breastfeeding really took a toll on my teeth

ListeningButNotHearing · 14/11/2022 20:54

Definitely get a second opinion.

flflflf · 14/11/2022 20:56

might be that you need some vitamin d / vitamin k supplements, K helps you absorb d which in turn helps with bones and calcium absorption. Make sure to use a fluoride toothpaste.
but I second getting another opinion!!

Yabado · 14/11/2022 20:56

I’ve never had a filling in my life and I’m a lot older than the OP
I did crack my tooth on holiday and got it removed but it’s right at the back so not noticeable
I am considering a bridge for the lost tooth but not sure
I go to the hygienist 3 times a year always have and have a check up once a year
Pretty decent straight whitish teeth

The only drinks I have are Diet Coke & coffee
and I don’t smoke

cant be genetics as both my parents lost all their teeth and had full denture sets

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 14/11/2022 20:58

I think a lot of it is down to genetics.

I've always had issues with my teeth and have lots of fillings, despite really looking after my teeth. I don't drink anything sugary and brush three times a day and yet...
I see the hygienist twice a year to help keep on top of things, and have twice yearly dental checkups too.

My DH on the other hand eats sugary crap all day long, drinks coke, never sees the hygienist and has not one single filling (aged late 40's!). He has checkups as often as me, as we all go as a family.

BabyShaark · 14/11/2022 22:17

I also think it’s genetic, although I have no scientific evidence for it. I’m in my mid forties, always looked after my teeth, but nevertheless only have few teeth without fillings, several crowns, two implants and several root canals. Once you have a filling, decay can develop underneath and it can be hard to spot (even on x rays if it’s not progressed enough, if it’s progressed enough that’s bad in itself).

That being said, do get a second opinion please. There are loads of cowboy dentists out there. I went to one once (literally, because I never went back) who told me that almost every filling I had needed replacing because they could have decay underneath, he quoted me about £5k for it (that was 10 years ago). Turned out to be b*llocks.

Lemonnhoney · 14/11/2022 22:23

It's kinda reassuring to hear other experience!

I've never had any hygienist work/cleaned ect.. I've never been offered it and tbh I associate dentist with pain and embarrassment.. not a place I want to be going more often! But maybe it's something I should look into.

It doesn't help it's so bloody expensive! I paid £66 today for him to look at my teeth do an x-ray and tell me all my teeth are fucked.

This is what he said! That under all my fillings is decay. Could be true! But yep I'm gunna get it checked out again with a dentist I trust.

My dentist says it mainly sugar or not brushing/flossing enough, but genetics play a small part.

I had a few fillings by 25, I didn’t have a bad diet but not great. I changed my diet at that time as I wanted to be healthier. I stopped eating chocolate, sweets, fizzy drinks etc. I’m early 40s now and haven’t needed a filling since so was definitely sugar for me. I felt much better without it too.

Get a second opinion but if they say the same, I’d try to lay off the sugar.

Walkwithmetonight · 14/11/2022 22:32

Mine are the same. It makes me feel so ashamed even though I don’t really feel like I eat that much sugar - couple of biscuits a day? Only drink water except coffee first thing. I take really good care of them too.

DONTMESSWITHMEDARNA · 14/11/2022 23:07

all mines are disintegrating from the back to the front as i have severe enamel erosion (google it, it's bad) as i have severe gerd and barrett's esophagus

my nhs dentist kicked me out last year after being with them my whole life as their policy changed and as i wouldn't pay 6 thousand plus for treatment, they took me off the books. The decay isn't even my fault it's a medical issue.

my teeth can't be fixed they all need taken out and false one's put in or dentures.
the enamel wears down so im left with brown pulp that then disintegrates slowly. I hate it

I'm stuck in limbo with nowhere to go as im a small Welsh village in the valleys of south Wales and we have 1 dentist that coves miles, I can't get anywhere else nhs wise in all of south Wales (im willing to travel that far)

i cant pay private as im a full-time carer(i mean 24/7 as we home educate) to a disabled child

im 41 and had perfect teeth up until then.

bridgetreilly · 14/11/2022 23:15

There’s a reason you get free dental treatment when you’re pregnant. It absolutely can mess with your teeth. Also, there’s a genetic component. Children with the same diet and brushing routine in the same family can end up with very different dental needs.

I'm so so sorry to hear that.

Yep tooth issues are horrible in themselves and the whole cost of it adds another dimension to it!

I’m a chocolate monster, I’m terrible for it. Older than the OP and not a single filling.

Definitely get a second opinion OP.

I agree this seems suspect

I'm well into my 40s, drink sugary tea and don't have a single filling
